I have seen windows smashed at sushi and Asian restaurant joints when waking my dog. NYPD has something like 20% of their force calling in sick. Many retailers have now boarded up their storefronts to keep from getting damaged or looted.
They also converted a Radisson hotel in my neighborhood into a homeless shelter so now we have mentally ill vagrants hanging out outside and harassing people.
Wow! A 1m old post and already a like! You must have a loyal following!

And here you go ...
“The NYPD has seen a 75% increase in reports of burglaries of commercial establishments from March 12, when New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a state of emergency, to March 31, police officials said. The NYPD recorded 254 burglaries of businesses during that time period this year compared with 145 for the same period last year, the officials said”

I am not super concerned about “smash and grabs” as a threat to the general public, no.
Yes
Right-wing radio and publications have already started trying to blame NYC/California for the pending outbreaks of coronavirus in Alabama/Florida/Georgia. Reality is that NYC/Cali got it early because of high travel from abroad, dense populations, etc., and FL/Bama/GA will be hit hard because their dense leadership put in distancing messages too late (and in some cases still allow churches and/or beaches to be open). I’m absolutely expecting this is a deliberate effort to paint NYC in a bad light, so they can shift blame from the terrible Republican leadership in those states to “liberals”, and try to keep Donnie Moscow in office. Plus, doing so makes it easier for the Donald to act like a “war time President” and distract from the fact that the outbreaks in NY and lack of supplies are almost entirely a result of his incompetence. I’d expect a lot more similar stories like you mentioned will start showing up.
Live in NYC. Haven’t seen a single instance of looting anywhere I’ve been (walkable distances so only a few neighborhoods on the west side of manhattan)
As a moderate who strongly believes in arming up to protect yourself, I see no evidence of such claims save an increase in hate crimes against Asian-Americans. I can envision a few scenarios where crime spirals out of control, but we are not close to there yet. Definitely right wing media spewing BS as usual.

Do you go out at nights? I used to go to the 7/11 to random stuff at night all the time. I've stopped doing that just because it's become a bit sketchier and theres not many witnesses. During the day I havent noticed any real difference.

Never been like that in my area, police are usually around that spot. Again one experience, doesnt mean the worlds falling apart, but there was a general feeling of uneasiness while I was out. Maybe I'll go take a walk again tonight at like 11.

I mean how do you know they are false reports?
You have to look at active NYPD, not just the entire count. How many officers are out because of the virus?
Then you have to look at street utilization by officer. How much more time will the remaining officers have to spend on the street to cover for those who are out?
Then you have to look at the required time spent writing up paperwork for each and every crime report vs. time spent on the street. How many crimes will go unreported because they are low level offenses and the paperwork is not worth the effort?
Then you have to do this for each region in NYC. Where do you live OW? East New York? Or Gentrified transplant filled Manhattan below 125th Street?
Guessing that OW works in a support function, there is no way he/she passed the case interview.

Absolutely. Any opportunity to divide.

The one thing the media cares about is views, truth is not really a big concern of theirs
Sorry, but that’s a ridiculous over-generalization. Yes, you’re right that A LOT of news orgs are 100% profit driven and truth may not be the primary concern. But it’s dangerous to lump all of “the media” in that bucket. What do you even mean by “the media”? It’s in an insult to the dedicated journalists still out there who report the news and take their jobs seriously. The real problem isn’t “the media”, it’s that critical thinking is practically non-existent in large portions of the American population these days, and as a result, people are practically incapable of detecting when they are being fed total BS if it happens to line up with their views. It’s why we have President Gameshow Host in the first place, and it’s why so many people seem incapable of grasping just how poor his response to this crisis has truly been

Thanks for the update, but I don’t think I said crime stopped.
People thinking crime is going up while it is actually going down is most years from the last half century.
People think the stock market is going down while it is actually going up from most years from the last half century
It’s not recent. Since Jan 1, NYPD has seen a >20% increase in crimes committed (https://gothamist.com/news/de-blasio-denies-nypd-fudges-crime-stats-truth-more-complicated). DiBlasio, not on the best of terms with NYPD, has backed that up and is blaming the bail reform bill. Personally speaking to detectives I know on the job, NYPD are not arresting unless the crimes are significant (mainly due to the bail reform, as the suspect will likely be out before the day is over). Download the Citizen app and keep an eye on what is going on around you or across NYC metro. From numerous “shots fired” calls to “group assaulting individual” - up to and including attempted arson and attempted destruction of a PIER in Far Rockaway, it’s not hype.
A consultant just got disproven with hard data from an PR employee.
Here, take this L Slalom. I’m revoking your consultant card.
Check again...
Citizen app has an uptick in “Man With Knife” reports.
Citizen is... iffy. I would not use that as a data source.
While Slalom and OW are living lives of privilege in their luxury apartments in gentrified neighborhoods, crime rises in NYC

Major 7 down 30% over the last 28 days. Sex crimes down 60%. Auto and burglary are up. Glad the NYPD are on top of it.
I’m sure Slalom and OW are still claiming that there is no violence in NYC. No protests outside my luxury apartment = didn’t happen. No looting in my gentrified neighborhood = didn’t happen.

Really?! Post them - and yes. It looks like the right is going to either cast us as deserving our fate (if it stays in the cities) or the architects of death in rural America (when it spreads).
Meanwhile, NYC is quiet as far as I can see. Want to see those articles.
O1, I want to see the articles because that’s what the original poster referenced and I’m interested in the tone. Pretty straightforward.
Yes! As I said in my original post, right wing news sources (WSJ) are reporting this kind of news 🙄
