I’m thinking of applying to uni’s to study finance. However, I have recently been told that it’s actually more valuable to have skills and experience in the workplace and study through a company.
What does everyone else think, is uni worth it or a waste of money??

Yes skills and experience are valuable however, if you don’t have education on finance and no experience, your chances of getting in are very slim. To me they are equally important until you have many years of experience then that’s different story.

But could I not gain experience by joining a trainee role and the company training me up and paying for studies? And then whilst I’m studying I’m gaining experience?

Yeah i don't think degrees or certificates hold as much weight as real life work experience and connections. I would put your time and energy towards building experience, networking, and teaching yourself skills.

Yeah, I am leaning more towards the experience side rather than uni. It seems more valuable

My bachelors is in international studies… I worked in a computer lab and then went into project management which is something that every industry uses on some level.

What are you thinking of doing once you are in finance?

In my company there are folks who started as a teller and then worked their way over into the technology area. I think there is someone celebrating 50 years with the bank. That is extremely rare.

Getting a degree through your employer will take longer but less debt. In the United States, I think the limit for the year is less than $6000 total that the company can pay for the degree.

Just watch out for any strings attached to using the benefit. One person found if they used the perk , they had to promise to work for the company for so many years.

I am based in the UK :)

I am thinking of going into financial management or being a management accountant for any company really. I have been told by many that the best way to do this is work my way up the ladder. Start first in a junior role and climb up!

I went the bachelor’s first route, and I wouldn’t say I’m that much further ahead than colleagues who never went to college.

Interesting, I have heard quite a few people say this. I think I am leaning more towards the working side and getting experience

I hear so many people say that they would not go back to school in today's job market and I have teo agree. It seems like most companies really do value experience more than education. That isn't the case for all roles though.

Yeah, most people are saying that to me! I think that's the route I will most likely go down

Hi all, I'm trying to break into sales coming from a technical background. It's been very difficult as a lot of recruiters only see the technical aspects of my previous role, even though I've added in some sales aspects from those roles. Any advice on how to break past the initial view of my resume/past technical experiences to get interviews?

After a final interview, how many days after can I expect an answer from the recruiter?

At the end of the interview, the person told me I passed the interview and they were going to talk to the Director who’s a level under them. It’s a yes for them and they’re happy to work with me.

I also sent my references. I don’t know when I can expect an reply. Recruiters from that company aren’t really organised

Hi All!

I am currently a Senior Software Engineer(Backend) with 4 YOE. My current CTC is 21LPA (All Fixed) with additional Yearly bonus. I got a call from

1. Does the lower designation offered make any difference?
2. Kinda ambiguous, but what kind of hike or ballpark pay can I expect?
3. Any similar interviews experiences or focus areas I should prepare for?

Came across a role that's a good fit.
Would ideally like to target it through a referral and not by applying through the career site.

Would also love to maybe take you for a meal or alike to thank you for it.

Is there any advantage to telling a company you are interested in working for in the future where you decided to accept an offer from? Or does it not matter? I accepted an offer a week ago with a great company (Company A) that for this season in my life seems like a great fit and only strengthens what I have to offer company B down the road. Company B just sent me a request for interview and I want to keep the door open with Company B but they were just very late in extending an interview.
