I’m updating my resume and can't decide if I should include my side projects. They show a lot of range that I don't get to use at work, but I don't want my resume to look messy. Would you include your own builds, or is it better to keep the focus strictly on professional experience? I just want to make sure I’m not hurting my chances for landing a better offer.

Definitely add your side projects in your CV. When I go through CVs, I tend to spend more time on the ones listing their side projects and GitHub repository, and I get a bit excited about it. Not only will I remember you, but it also hints me that you might be passionate, ambitious, and have some good things to share in the interview. I would often start conversations about side projects, what you learned and discuss the technical decisions made. In this competitive market it does make a difference

If you've done some really interesting side projects it would be a shame to leave them out. Perhaps work up a section of side projects and group them together and have that near the bottom of the page. Obviously, highlight the most interesting projects, or the ones which would relate most closely to jobs you're seeking.

That’s an interesting perspective

I would only include what is directly related to the job. Showing you have range might not be what they are looking for.

I guess my concern is that it shows up all over the place and is not focused. Appreciate you giving a different side!

I encourage early career people to post their project but if you have adequate work experience, the work you did in that environment has more value to me

If you're using GitHub as your vcs, make the project public and put a link to your GitHub on your CV!

Make sure to you have advanced and are still upskilling to more a more serious role in your projects if you really want to display your projects. Every good thing comes in two unique parts just like recursion comes in two main parts, including the dynamic side

Make sure the side project have impact on you and others around you. Mental health is a great cusp many don't think about, especially as a software engineer or a niche field as creative as software engineers and scientist.

Read that McK is paying 2K higher than BCG this year which means BCG will probably raise again next year to at least match. However, they can’t just copy McK with 2K to match because that would look bad so they’ll have to beat it again. Then McK and Bain will follow. Barring a devastating recession, I’m guessing this means MBB is all getting raises again next year?

How to stay up to date as a software architect?
I've migrated from being a software engineer to a software architect role.

Serious question from a happy software engineer, what do you all love about your work/actually enjoy doing during working hours?

I'll start; I'm privileged enough to have been given the opportunity to work and learn deeply on Linux and Kubernetes, and I get to tinker and play with them all day. Problem solving with them is a "fun" part of my job.

Of course most things aren't roses and sunshine, but I'd love to hear the positive parts of what you are doing, or what you like to do at work.

I am a contract employee that was just brought on a month ago. I have done well with onboarding and learning their tech. I have now been asked to design an architecture for an upcoming project, and document it all. Nothing at this company has been well documented before. I have a feeling they just planning to use my previous experience and then let me go since my pay is high. Is there a way I can safeguard against this?

I am trying to figure out how to switch to SWE. I have a masters in civil engineering and have a good background in higher level math. It looks like the better coding boot camps are quite expensive. The alternative is another masters in CS which is the same cost as many boot camps. Any recommendations on picking between a coding boot camp and getting another masters degree in CS? I’m looking to get into the best position possible after getting an education in CS (get a job quick and good pay).

Has anyone else worked two programming roles at one time?
I currently work as a Contracted Software Engineer and I’m set to finish my contracted time at the end of October. To stay ahead of game I started to move forward in the interview process with another opportunity as an Application Software Programmer and just received notification that I got the position. I definitely could use the extra paycheck to help out with my financial obligations. Just wanted to see if anyone has done this before.

What do you think about switching tech stacks vs becoming an expert in one stack? I am a backend Java engineer, and have solely used Java since I've started my software engineering career about 2 years ago. I don't know whether I should explore other tech stacks while I'm young, or instead focus on becoming a Java expert, given that I enjoy working in Java.
