in law, words are everything—every comma, every clause, every nuance matters. And yet when it comes to feedback? I’ll spend days on a memo or motion and get a single “fine” or “thanks.” No context, no direction, no idea if I nailed it or totally missed the mark. I want to get better, but it feels impossible to grow when no one takes the time to actually tell you what you’re doing well or where you need to improve. How are we supposed to develop in this vacuum?

You may get more traction asking for advice rather than feedback. Weird little mental trick that seems to make a big difference. So instead of “please let me know if there is feedback on the draft attached” try “attached is the draft. I would appreciate any advice on how I could improve it.”

It’s frustrating, but sadly common. Try asking for specific feedback on one aspect instead of a general “how was it?” You might get more helpful insights when you guide the conversation.

Thank you for your feedback 🤦🏻‍♀️

The absence of criticism is approval. If you’re not getting edits, you’re doing well. Positive feedback in this field is rare.

Exactly. It’s not as though the partner is saying, “This is a really mediocre brief but I’ll sign my name to it anyway.”

The sense that I get is it is very much you sink or swim on your own.

Common. But it also depends who you work with. If you’re getting 0 feedback from anyone at your firm then it might be a systematic issue you can’t fix. If you can live with it, then it is what it is. If it’s a dealbreaker then you should look to move.

Has anyone found roles in Big 4 or industry that allowed more work life balance when their kids were young without damaging future career trajectory? I'm a partner with young kids and feel like I'm missing out on too much of their lives. Wishful, but my dream job would have a lighter workload in terms of time and pressure for the next ~5 years, but not set me back too much (or at all) when the kids are older and tired of me in a few years and I'm ready to be back at work full force.

Any idea what will be criteria for PDM to start green card process?

I have 32k miles with THY that are about to expire. Normally I'd go ahead and book a flight, but I can't project which countries might be locked down again 5-6 months from now (haven't accrued enough PTO to travel in near future). The only other way to keep the miles is to pay $10 per 1000 miles, as far as I know. Are there other strategies?

Good Afternoon. I have been with my current company for ten months. They quickly realized that I was overqualified for the position I was given. So look, not trying to be a dick here, but legit, why do people who live in nyc always give off the vibe that they’re so proud of themselves? Like they’ve accomplishing something just by being there. I’ve lived in huge American cities before but never felt compelled to aggressively pat myself on the back just for signing an overpriced lease. It’s a great place and all, don’t get me wrong, no need to get defensive, but come oooooon, really? Just curios that’s all :)
