In light of Microsoft layoffs hitting legal teams, I’ve become more concerned about AI coming for in-house jobs than I previously was. Anybody else equally concerned or even shocked it’s happening already? How are you anticipating weathering this storm from a professional sense?

What types of roles got hit at Microsoft legal? If it's just the contract team, then yeah...folks are in big trouble.

corporations are frothing at the mouth to accelerate ai growth. look at the meta paypackages

If you’re purely a commercial/contracts attorney, yes. Anything else like privacy, product, IP, M&A - no.

Maybe im under thinking it, but expecting AI to spit out controls and mitigations for products like Meta Rayban sunglasses or adtech trackers seems farfetched to me given the complexities behind those products. I’ve tried it myself to get feedback on ad tech stuff and it has a long long way to go.

I could see it being effective for maybe software? But it would be severely limited, I think.

We’ve been seeing more implementation of AI tools, so getting up to speed/upskilling would be important

Legal roles that require high quality decision making in faces of ambiguity will stay. Others not so much.

AI will definitely take jobs, but not all of them.

In house much more at risk than at a firm given high amount of administrative and paralegal work, along with business partners being able to directly use AI to circumvent ex-CLO or VP level legal members.

I read a contract from San Diego that had some very interesting language for Special Educators. Thinking about sending it to the Union to see.

Colleague has put in his resignation. They are offering him whatever he wants to stay including 4days a week work from home. He’s not bluffing and plans to leave. However, at this same time I was asked to begin working as a supervisor for the engineering team and I would get a promotion at the beginning of the year. I have been supervising and managing our team of 6 for months with no extra pay or bonuses. I was told yesterday that raises will be light this year. Yet today they spare nothing.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. It’s definitely going to be a pay cut coming from big law but I do get some nice equity in the company. Is the jump worth it? I’m so burnt out by big law and this seems like an awesome opportunity to help shape a newish company. Any tips on how to figure out if this is the right move for me?

How do I get signatories to fill in their company name correctly on a DocuSign PowerForm NDA? I’m not allowed to reach out to people in advance and prepare customized NDAs for them, because “everyone is automated” and “that’s too slow and causes too much work for them.” I moved the signatory info to the signature block and made a “Full Legal Name of Entity you Represent” line, but people still screw it up and I’m getting blamed. WTF do I do?

Considering joining a small 50-person company as the only attorney (prior attorney is retiring). (I am currently in-house at a F50). For others who have done the same path, what surprises did you have when moving from a large company to a small one?

For example, it sounds like I should not expect a document management system, based on a prior post in this bowl. I’m guessing expenses like state bar fees and cell phone are not reimbursed.

Any advice on things to expect (or not expect)?

How far do you require depts be with negotiating commercial contract terms before your legal review? I’m talking routine low value and risk contracts (e.g., vendor services), where Legal terms won’t kill the deal. My clients blindly forward contracts. I say “are you sure this term is ok?” And often get “no.” They’re surprised because they never read them. Checking the temp to see what others experience, what might be normal. I feel contract training in my clients’ future...

What would be a typical salary for a junior in house counsel role (3 yoe) at a publicly traded company in a secondary market (think Austin, Tampa, Charlotte)? I’m having a really hard time finding what a reasonable range would be. Most positions I’m applying to require desired salary in the application, and the truth is I’d accept anything north of 125k but don’t want to undersell myself and take a bigger cut than necessary coming from biglaw.

I started a new role 3 months ago and I don’t feel like I’m being set up to succeed. There was basically no onboarding. I have no clue who to go to for anything. We have no central repository for old documents, so I’m constantly fumbling around & starting from zero. I keep finding systems or programs that someone was supposed to get me access to/train me on but never did. I’m so stressed out because I never know if I’m missing something huge.
