I hate to sound callous, but just cut communication and let him deal with these things on his own. Getting involved and questioning whether or not you should is a no-no, bc it makes things hairy.
If you have a separate relationship then I’d let them know you are not coming. It is a polite think to do from your end. You don’t need to reply to any follow up texts. We don’t know what sort of relationship you have with them. Your conversations with then should indicate how you want to handle it; it they were pretty basic and they know only as a +1 and nothing more about you, then drop it and go your merry way.
