watch ur rent, don’t go out in brickell
If you do go out in Brickell, make sure it’s happy hour 😂
We moved here almost 10 years ago for my husband’s job. What I kept hearing were these lowball offers and “we pay in subshine hee hee hee!”
While hiring managers are very quick to tell you it’s cheaper to live here than Manhattan… that’s like marking a Shein coat up to $500 and saying “it’s cheaper than Burberry!”
PM1 thank you for sharing this. I can totally see all of the above to be authentic Miami experiences, unfortunately. I am sorry you are going through all this.
Very interesting perspective on personal responsibility (not being sarcastic) - now that I think about it, having lived for many years in downtown Miami before moving south, I can totally see that.
I also find the healthcare system to be very bad but as an immigrant I thought it was the american standard. So many bad stories of hospitals to share mysefl but doctors wise I can tell you after cycling through many Pcps and specialists we finally found the ones that are up to our standards. Stay strong and dont accept mediocrity, promise you better exists!
Another interesting thing you mentioned was about bad managers - yup your experience is similar to mine. I think it has to do with the lack of personal boundaries combined with arrogance and a poor job market for anyone making 50k+. South America is like that in terms of personal boundaries. Not saying it is right but that it is cultural. Unfortunately it leads to negative experiences like the ones you shared but it also leads to being easier to make friends and ask for help. Dont get me wrong, i now think it is a bad thing but acknowledge that it has its positives.
On the racism - yes indeed! South Miami I can say is less like that and the community we live in is very diverse and inclusive. But racism is definitely still around. I can only compare to chicago that is my experience is way less racist, philly is also way less and some cities in texas that are just as racist as miami.
Stay strong and stay safe, my friend. Tks again for sharing!
Definitely a money sink.
Expensive as hell! Even in the suburbs. Also, you will need a car. Car insurance is expensive. Make sure you account for everything on your budget. Also, most Miami companies want on-site work, no remote. Count commuter cost in there. Definitely not the cool and affordable area they were selling 3 years ago. DM me
If you need detials
Dont get me wrong I have a long list of stuff I dont like about Miami. Left Brickell for a suburb 3 yrs ago and know rent in Brickell (which was already expensive AF) skyrocketed during the pandemic. The city is not ready for the influx it received.
Suburb life (Pinecrest) is much better for our family.
Definitely need a car. Actually 2. For some reason a lease for a Jetta is very close to a BMW X1. Ford Edge more expensive than Model Y.
Auto insurance seems at parity with what I have paid in other States.
Unless you buy a property with the intention of having it as an investment property or living there for a specified amount of time and then sell it. Miami is a money pit. There are other markets such as Orlando that have at minimum $400-500 less monthly rent than Miami.
I lived Downtown before the prices are what they are now and moved out to the suburbs. While rent is cheaper there all the communities tack on trash fees etc it costs maybe $350 less than living Downtown. Also I never had roommates either and still do not by choice.
Honestly no
Definitely find a roommate if you can, it will save you a ton. That way you can go out and enjoy some of the more costlier activities and not forging it all on rent.
Everything is expensive and will continue the same path on the following years. Try to negotiate a good salary. Also, I have friends in their 20s living in the Brickell area and making good money, they still live with roommates.
Don’t drink or eat out often. Rent prices is what will drain your money the most. If you can, find a remote position to save on commuting.
Define expensive..
Rental for 1bedroom is around $2000
More like $2500-$3000
it’s a money sink. get a roommate if u want a decently nice place in a good location and don’t want to pay > $3k in rent.
contrary to what ppl here are saying, you don’t absolutely need a car. if u live in brickell, downtown, edgewater, wynwood, or midtown, u can manage without. anywhere else u need a car.
miami does have the best happy hour in the world imo - pretty much every place has some happy hour, even on weekends, and some have great food specials. so that’s one way to enjoy urself and not totally break the bank.
other than that, going out, especially dining out, is pretty expensive. i read people on reddit from whatever city talking about their $600/mo food budget and im like… that’s what i spend in some weeks.
problem is price increases are driven by remote workers, foreign squatters, and since miami historically hasn’t had a high caliber labor market or many large companies for a city of its size, salaries are not anywhere close to what u would want. it has the highest cost of living/wage disparity in the country.
How much are you making?
Considering $2300 is approximately 25% of your salary, you will be OK for a small studio apartment in Brickell probably. You will be comfortable if you are debt free and have no car payments. If you need to budget for auto and/or debt, pushing outward towards the suburbs or finding a roommate will help you keep a decent quality of life. Also, it goes without saying if you are not in Brickell and do not own a car, you should budget for auto because public transit in this city doesn’t serve white collar workers very well in terms of reliability and comfort.
Extremely expensive
Miami is pretty cheap compared to other cities you can find a nice place for ~$2500 give or take. Just make sure you negotiate salaries I've heard people get low balled
