Of all the concerns about being a copywriter, this is by far the least of them
I think that ultimately advertising, especially creative in an agency setting is a young persons game. The whole agency model is dependent on squeezing as much free work out of you as possible. It’s good to learn your craft and make money, but when life starts happening advertising is a tough business to be in. You will miss a lot of important life events because you are on a pitch, have late nights and weekend work (all uncompensated). I am 32, worked all over the place and still am in the business. I do see the sun starting to set a bit, and mainly because I am not sure I want to work this way anymore.
It’s your journey though. Make of it what you will.
I’ve been doing this for close to 40 years. And things have changed so dramatically. The big paydays of the 80s and 90s are gone. Kind of like the way healthcare has changed the economics of being a doctor. My father was a World War II vet who went to medical school on the G.I. bill and came out of school free from debt. Today the average doctor enters the workforce with a half $1 million of debt. Some crazy amount of turmoil has to happen in order to right this economic ship we are sailing on.
What do they mean by that? I feel like most people are ignorant about how challenging this career really is.
Do you openly discuss career struggles with them? Do they not believe that it's a serious job? There's certainly people struggling in advertising. There are plenty of others who make it work for them.
I can’t imagine there’s any careers that are stable these days. I’ve worked in other industries and never felt “safe” in any of them, including advertising.
copywriting is a serious craft, and it’s frustrating when others don’t see that. Many of us feel uncertain right now, but the key is to keep honing your skills, stay adaptable, and maybe explore ways to diversify your work. The future might be unpredictable, but passion and continuous growth can help you carve out a stable, fulfilling path.
The ad game is no longer safe. Year over year more and more jobs are being automated, bundled into existing roles, and is super discriminatory when it comes to age. Just yesterday Sam Altman said that AI will continue to take over ad agencies roles and provide a cheaper alternative to human-powered creative. Seeing too many friends pivot out or age out of the industry. Lastly, I’ve been hearing the same thing for the past 7 years about my career it being sustainable. I’ve pivoted to hybrid strategy and marketing roles with startups.
