Digital nomad is only good if you're not a w2
If I’m logging PTO, I’m not checking emails at all. However, when I’m traveling and pseudo digital nomading, I’m working a regular day like any other and it’s more than just a week long. I have at least both weekends on either side of the week and if it’s in a location in the same time zone as mine, I try to make sure it’s in the summertime or a season where I’ll get to enjoy a few hours of sunlight after work. I do like to choose slightly different time zones so I have either mornings or afternoons free depending on if I went east or west.
So to answer your question, no it’s not a vacation. IMO you can either take a vacation, or travel and work.
I'm in an industry and at a level where I can never be truly away (which I'm fine with, it's a trade-off).
Pre-covid lockdowns, it was always an in-office industry, since then, there is much more flexibility and reliance on technology.
Now, when I'm on vacation, I'll log 2-3 hours/day primarily to stay on top of emails. I don't mind this at all, because I schedule that time when it's convenient, and it gives me peace of mind when I'm done and enjoying the trip. It's also allowed me to take longer vacations than I ever did before.
I personally have now developed a preference for not working during vacation. PTO is paid time off, you’re supposed rest during your time off. I found that when I worked from home, because I had the perfect condition to just work with no distractions, less commute, easy to focus, I found that sometimes I really had to ensure I was being strict about working my designated work hours and not overworking. Any job where I am told on call or remote availability is required I negotiate a higher salary. Any employer requiring me to be available 24/7 will compensate me. Otherwise respect the fact that our employees do require rest periods.
You want to work while you travel? I suggest being very good at managing your time and setting boundaries as to when you’re available
