If there is, I haven't found it. I don't have a problem disclosing my SSN, primarily because I vet every job posting thoroughly before submitting any of my personal information. With so many scams out there, you really can't ever be too careful.

This is good approach. I think its important to be cautious before giving SSN
Once I get further in the process, giving them my SSN is inevitable. I am cautious about any information. Vet the company, platform, everything first. Once I feel comfortable, I’ll go ahead, but I don’t see the social come up on most of my applications, at least at first.
Your SS number is not secure. They want it to buy a car, buy a house or anything at all. The unemployment office took my SS number as identification, even though it clearly states on the back of it, NOT TO BE USED AS IDENTIFICATION ! Bottom line there isn't anything personal anymore. Hence all the fraud going on.
When it comes to your personal information it's sold to the highest bidder. The federal goverment was hacked a few years ago of which I was a victim
The point I'm trying to make is every place that ask for SS number, DL number or your mother's maiden name just creates a avenue for fraud to find you. Prove me wrong !

This is exactly how I feel. All our personal information is leaked and its very dangerous. How can we protect ourselves in this environment?
At some point you'll probably have to provide it. But I would also emphasize that you need to make sure you know who you are dealing with. There are countless scams out there, including scammers who will imitate legitimate companies as a way of committing identity theft. If you know you're dealing with a legit business, providing the number won't do any harm. But due diligence is required!
