I didn’t play sports growing up, but I’ve always admired the camaraderie they seem to foster. It makes sense that so many women in leadership have that kind of background.
I have been to some women led networking events, and never really put the pieces together that a lot did play sports! I played volleyball in high school. I feel like sports really is an amazing way for women to learn and get to experience that competitive drive and ambition!
“Have played sports” is so general. I mean, yeah, someone may have played T-ball in elementary school but weren’t competitive in high school or college but may check a “I played sports” checkbox because they did PE at school. So I read it as a very general statement. That said, yes, sports builds resilience, fosters team work, etc, so it’s good overall, I’m just tripping up on the very general language used and not sure how meaningful the data is.
94% of women in c-suite positions are white too
Is that surprising? 🤷
Americans are obsessed with sports as the path to glory. This is not surprising.
My guess is 94% of people not in c suite positions also played sports.
Yup
I played soccer, rugby and rowed in undergrad. Tore my meniscus, had surgery and shoulder injuries from rugby. I wouldn’t change a thing even though the injuries have sidelined me from a few things.
Totally agree! Playing soccer gave me those same skills: discipline, teamwork, resilience. It’s interesting how those lessons transfer into the workplace, especially in leadership roles. Sports definitely shaped a lot of qualities that have helped me thrive in high-pressure environments
Sports teaches team work skills that traditional female extra curricular activities do not. I realized this about 25-30 years ago. Most traditional female extra curricular activities teach women to compete against each other - specifically playing a musical instrument, dance, voice lessons and pageants. The only traditional female activity that teaches women to work as a group is cheer.
Oh wow, I am not surprised by it either but I definitely did not know that was a things. I was very compeitive as a kid and played just about every sport that you can think if but I was really good at Basketball and volleyball because I am very tall.
I take issue with the fact that non-team sports don’t teach you to be competitive. playing in an orchestra is a team sport. Dance is a team sport. We don’t have to behave like men in order to get that same sort of camaraderie.
This is so Interesting! Played soccer for 25 years🫶😍
