1. Take care of and emphasize the “small things,” e.g., swearing, saying thank you and please, asking permission, making kids aware and helping to keep your room clean, chairs pushed in, etc., and they won’t grow into big problems.
2. Go out of your way to say hello, give a fist bump, a smile, etc., to the toughest, rottenist kid in school. Someday, it will pay dividends.
I love this. It is so important to set those standards in elementary. If they are not learning to be polite and respectful in the home then I better make sure it is happening in my room. Using yes ma'am and non ma'am, answering in complete sentences, pushing chairs in cleaning up around the room even if it isn't their mess. It is the little things that real make the biggest difference in attitude throughout the years.
I love to “read backwards” with my small groups! I show a paragraph on my smart board but I cover all the sentences except the last one. We read it aloud and talk about what could possibly have happened before this sentence. Then, I uncover another sentence and we read both aloud and adjust our predictions. We keep going until we’ve read the whole story and we end up reading it as many times as there are sentences! Excellent for fluency, supports comprehension, and the kids think it’s sooooo silly to read something backwards!! I do this with 2nd-5th graders and it’s a hit!
Play hangman on the board to teach vocabulary words. My students love it are are always engaged. This can work in any subject. When students get stuck, I put the hangman model on the board, give a short clue and off we go.

Maybe call it lasso the horse and draw a horse. Or just draw a person without the hang. Get creative and make up your own version to fit your school’s philosophy.
