It’s 8:00 PM and the physical dread of tomorrow’s staff meeting is hitting me like a ton of bricks. We’ve been told it’s another data dive that could have definitely been an email, yet here we are. I’m currently hiding in my laundry room with a glass of wine just to feel something other than professional anxiety. How do you all shut your teacher brain off so you can actually enjoy your evenings and weekends?

Definitely need to leave work at work. I’ve been at this for 34 years and I used to work 70 hours a week. I refuse to do it anymore. Work to the contract, leave work at work and enjoy your life. The idea that teachers are supposed to be martyrs is a ridiculous concept that was put in place to get us to work for free. If the parents aren’t parenting, why should the teachers spend 30 hours FREE OVERTIME a week to teach?

Stay busy after work with your family and friends. Make time to meet up in person or talk on the phone or Skype each other. Pick up a hobby to do as well: reading, listen to great music, plan your next vacation!!!

That’s the million dollar question. I envy those who can disassociate from work. Work and that kind of stress is always on my mind. I carry it with me.

I’m graduating in December, with a background in environmental economics and policy. Consulting didn’t work out this cycle. Made it to final rounds for Bain and Kearney but in the end didn’t get an offer. I want to recoup and try again, but I’m worried that once I’m out of undergrad the door will be closed to starting in consulting.

What can I do to make this happen? I have friends and connections at Bain and Kearney and the other firms as well, but not sure if it’s feasible now.
