I wish we did. I feel bad for the folks who make the goals, only to learn that someone else made goal + 20% and is gonna get the top ranking instead. Hard to run a race where you don't know the pace.
We do. And I agree that it helps you level set with your peers and ensure that expectations are consistent. Obviously there’s people who will use it to breed negativity but those people will find something regardless to whine about
SA1, that to me seems like a far superior approach which accomplishes the same ostensible goals as sending around everyone’s utilization to everyone else.
It’s good.to know where I am comparing to my peers.
It’s become normal to me now, but I was shocked when I learned about this practice after I started. Agree that it’s bullshit and terrible for morale.
TA1-Not saying this is the case for your manager but keep in mind the higher you go the more work you do that is non-chargeable (new business development, trainings etc). That being said 30% utilization is pretty low but he will be scrutinized at his level as well.
Where can you see it for EY?
Yes, but it just makes me sad working constantly and seeing my manager at 30% utilized coming in at 10 and leaving at 3 everyday.
My office started doing it this year. REALLY gives me a reason to hate some people more.
It varies by group, I think. I liked to see it as a staff, but not for anything good except being a competitive demon. When I was at PwC, we definitely got the data regularly.
EY does
Moss had certain regions that did. Now I think only managers and above get the report
Pwc does
Managers above receive but Seniors and Associates only get a monthly report with a “peer average” to compare against. Somewhat helpful to not introduce to Associates and Seniors yet as it doesn’t create a competitive environment for staff
BT makes this info available to everyone. It’s helpful
It’s helpful. It helps me know when everyone is slow, if I need to be delegating more, etc. it helps lessen the anxiety of not knowing if I’m somehow failing to meet expectations without even knowing it
Our office doesn’t share them.
EY 3- A utilization report goes out each week for your service line. Just filter to expand outside of your group and you can see utilization for the region. I think It only goes to seniors and up
Our office used to before I started but I heard it caused a lot of problems. Those working hard got pissed and worked less and directors would automatically assign work to the least utilized people for the month but not coordinate so they’d end up with like 140% the next month even if was because they had taken a week or 2 of vacation.
We just had this issue in our office. During busy season (tax) we had full visibility. Now, "leadership " decided that is not useful anymore.
Yes, it creates problems when people see slackers being treated like gold. However, competition is most of the times a positive thing. When "leadership" likes to keep us in the dark, the frustration increases. Transparency shouldn't hurt business, unless fishy stuff happens. And yes, people will bitch with or without access to this information.
