That’s sad you feel undervalued at work. I am joining a consulting firm in a few weeks but it isn’t in healthcare.

I’m curious if you’re open to sharing: What are the language barriers? What do you need to feel valued at work? I think it’s important to keep in mind that work is a shared environment to meet a particular end and you receive compensation in exchange for your labor. Everyone is generally putting on their work face for the particular office culture and they’re different outside of work when they’re relaxed and can be their true self. I think sometimes some Black people assume everyone else is not putting on their work face, so it makes it feel more isolating when you think you’re the only one doing it.

I don’t know you so I’m not sure if it’s the case with you but I’ve worked with some Black women who express feeling disappointed that they’re not embraced while they’re also not being collegial in the workplace and the truth is if you’re not authentically collegial and friendly, people are less likely to embrace you. I know it can be hard to be collegial when you’re not comfortable in a space though. I hope you’re able to find areas of your life where you feel valued.

Been living in a luxury building for about a year and start noticing that I have a mild cough when I’m in the building. Thought it’s just something residual after my cold but then I went for a week out of town and it disappeared completely only to start again when I got back and stepped into my building.
