I’ve been at my current agency for 18 months and my CD just told me I’m taking the lead on a new global account, but there was zero mention of a title change or a raise. Is this just the standard hazing ritual for climbing the ladder? How do you guys bring up the money talk when the responsibilities start creeping up?

Do the work. The recognition will come. Make something of the opportunity and don’t immediately expect that you’ve deserve more money. Prove yourself.

I agree somewhat in that more work is expected initially in the name of “proving yourself”. However I think it’s worth speaking with your manager about how they measure success and what those successes mean for your upward career (and salary) mobility. Just sitting back and waiting for recognition to come for a job well-done is naive: the company’s goal is to wring every bit of effort out of you for as little money as they can get away with. Document your successes against metrics that you and your manager set together to prove you’re worth an eventual pay bump. And if that pay bump doesn’t come, use this experience to seek out a job where you will be paid accordingly.
