I’ve been at my new firm for about a year. People like my work product and I’ve gotten good reviews, but not much work flows my way. I get people saying to appreciate being slow but it has been a while and to be honest I don’t feel like I’m being appropriately utilized within the firm. Firm appears busy otherwise At what point should I consider potentially making a move?

Go with gut instinct! I was in the same position and ended up staying at the firm for just over 3 years convincing myself it would get better. It didn’t. Like you, had to constantly nudge seniors but everyone wants to keep the billable hours and no one wants to explain or teach.

Don’t leave it too long if things don’t change.

Are you in a free market system or central staffing? If the latter, not much reason to sweat it, UNLESS you are significantly slower than your peers in your group. If the former, is it just you who are slow or are your peers slow as well? If it’s just you, are you doing everything you can to build internal connections with partners and ask for work? If you are, then it may be time to lateral again if things don’t pick up for you soon.

like

The former. Some associates get more work than others. No one is saying I’m slow but I do nudge partners often and usually get smaller, one off projects than bigger projects.

Reach out, reach out, reach out…and make sure you deliver when you are supposed to…

Go above and beyond with the work you are getting and ask for more to build the trust they need to feel they can delegate the meatier things to you.

I've become really jaded about consulting. I find all so often you need to tell the client what they want to hear to keep their business and I feel like so much of the what I recommend doesn't actually get implemented. I'm looking to make a career switch so I can both create and execute on my strategies. A product management path seems very promising for this.

Does anyone who switched from consulting to product management have any recommendations of h helpful PM books, courses, or programs?

Thoughts on sending out assignments over the weekend? I work a lot on weekends, but I don’t expect associates too. But, because I work on weekends, I often will send out assignments by email with a clear indication in subject line and body that it does not need to be completed or worked on over the weekend. A friend recently mentioned this isn’t the best since seeing the assignment may create unnecessary stress and anxiety. So, what say you? Am I terrible partner?

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.
