Happy Lunar New Year!
Hi, I hope everyone's having a good Sunday and staying safe! A little nervous about posting here but here it goes! I started an instagram page to showcase some amazing Asian talents and their work in our industry.
I'd love to see more representation of Asians in our industry, especially at leadership level. I wanted to create a place where we can empower, support, and inspire each other.

I don’t think I was raised the way this industry needs me to be. So it’s constant work to be more confident and assertive and to push back. It’s just not naturally who I am. But am am harder working which fits the stereotype. This doesn’t really answer your question bc I think you’re asking for more perception. My answer is much more inward and self perception
Since I look like I’m 16 new clients or vendors will sometimes assume I’m the coordinator, there to take notes and let the adults talk (I don’t get a ton of eye contact until I assert authority vocally). I’ve also been told I don’t count as diversity, which I found more fascinating than offensive.
Because asian men don’t have as much of a perceived disadvantage?
It wasn’t bad when I was junior. In fact, it probably helped. But now that I’m further along in my career, it’s definitely an issue. I look young, and am short so to my clients, that means that I’m the subordinate and my Caucasian, Amazon AE is the senior one. I’m also an introvert, which “owning the room/meeting” feels nearly impossible no matter how much I prep.
I fought to be an AAD but the title doesn’t even help much most of the time.
I think there are certain pros or stereotypes that play in our favor in my role but i definitely resonate with some of the introvert sentiment some others have posted about
I can share a personal experience being Asian and growing up, I was not taught to be the loudest person in the room. Instead, I was told to get good grades and do well. With that being said, I am still working on speaking up more to be heard in order to be successful for executive presence.
As a creative, you get more production design briefs than campaign briefs (ones that involve your conceptual skills)
You have to be more proactive and come up with more concepts and ideas to prove what you can do. Then all the briefs will eventualy start coming to you
It depends. As an analyst it can be a positive but in more traditional roles I feel it could have a negative effect
