Totally feel this! Maybe you just legitimately need more rest. Are you getting 7-8 hours of restorative sleep a night? Not tossing and turning? In my 40s I don’t have the energy I had in my 20s and 30s. I’m also more sensitive to caffeine so if I have it in the afternoon my sleep is disturbed. It might also be anemia. Or seasonal depression or depression in general. A quick 20 minute walk in the sunlight really helps boost my mood and energy and breaks up my long working days. Sleep, eating well, moderate exercise help but all easier said than done with our busy lives. Good luck!
Great suggestions there. I didn't think about anemia being a possible culprit, so that's something else I'll have checked out. Thank you.
I had the same issue, and it turned out my iron and vitamin D levels were low, so it's good that you're checking your levels. I start doing something small but enjoyable right after work, like a 5-minute stretch or sitting outside with a cup of tea. If I told myself I had to work out or cook something elaborate, I’d just shut down, but if I gave myself a little transition time, I felt more capable of following through.
How old are you? Any chance it’s perimenopause? That can start as much as 7 or 8 years before me I pause finally begins, but it can really mess with you.
Agree re perimenopause. For me very informative were podcasts on YouTube by Charlene Johnson. She provides most of the information in a very user friendly way. Of course she is promoting something as well (like vitamins), but basics explained very well. Checking hormones level (including female ones) is a good start. As for vitamin deficiencies most common D, iron (there are 2 main tests) and B12.
Estrogen Matters is a great book, too.
Firstly, sleep. Are you getting enough? Prioritize it!
I find that the exercise in the AM works best before my day begins because I am so drained from work by the end of the day I have all the excuses and it won’t happen.
I work out from 5:30-6 ish. My young kids wake by 6…. Out the door for school by 7:30.
It’s sometimes hard to go to bed early as it’s time a value after my kids go to sleep and I tend to stay up a little later to enjoy, but I aim for lights out by 10 at the latest.
Also, take a walk during your busy day. Find something to decompress even if it’s 5 minutes. We need a reset often as leaders to continue to show up at our best!
