I've been invited to join the board of a small non-profit. There's a minimum donation requirement ($5k), as well as a minimum fundraising requirement ($5k) which turns into a donation requirement if you're unable to fundraise. Is this normal/legit?

Yes, unfortunately. Those minimums are consistent with (and maybe even on the lower end of) what I’ve seen.
I understand why non-profit boards prioritize the ability to raise funds but I do think those practices can end up screening out committed community members from less affluent backgrounds and preventing many of the people actually affected by the nonprofit’s policies from participating in decisionmaking

Yes, it’s normal. Boards help financially sustain nonprofits. Make sure it’s one you feel aligned with that is well-led!

I’m an immigration paralegal but I have an MA in human rights. I’ve been working at my org for 2 1/2 years but I don’t see an upwards growth for me unless I go to law school but that is really expensive and it’ll take a few years. I’ve tried to seek promotion to Senior paralegal but I’ve been told I don’t have enough experience. Does anyone have any advice on what organizations may be interested in hiring someone with my experience?
