I know nonprofits have to register in each state where they solicit charitable donations. What if someone from a state where the org isn’t registered makes a donation bc of something they saw online or on social media?

It should be fine - most states treat soliciting as actively reaching out to potential donors (I.e. annual campaign letters, sending out emails, etc.). If someone randomly decides to give you a donation without you doing anything, you shouldn’t have a state issue. If they continue to reach out to that donor then they should probably register as that would be deemed soliciting (depends on the state - some don’t have registration requirements or they have minimum thresholds that would trigger registering).
