Have you actually gotten to the stage where they’re checking references? I made sure that I have someone I trust from my former employers on my reference list.
Yes, I have. And I have many customers and business owners listed. But it hasn't gotten me anywhere. I am still trying my ass of though. This is why I miss the times where you walked in and asked for an application in-person. At least then they saw you and spoke to you a bit and got a small first impression.

I don't know where you're located, but in California there isn't much a former employer's HR department can say about you. Typically, they can only confirm that you worked there, your dates of employment, your job title, a brief description of your duties, and whether there were any disciplinary actions or the reason for termination.
There can be consequences if they disclose more than that. Because of the potential liability, many companies limit references to just three things:
Dates of employment
Job title
Sometimes rehire eligibility
