I don't reference market data during actual negotiations. For one, it's often inaccurate. For another, it opens the door to obvious pushback. "Oh, that's what the market's paying? Okay, go find a place offering it because we're not going to. Best of luck." It can be useful for getting an idea of what you should be targeting. It's not enough on its own to get you more money during negotiating. Employers are just as aware of the current state of the job market as we are.
Very true. I have found the same thing, thank you!
The biggest challenge is that it is good to reference but often difficult to determine how accurate because it is mainly based on job titles and actual responsibilities can vary company to company.
It’s an extreme example but if I start a company with 60 people and have a CFO they are going to make a fraction of what Apples CFO makes. But they will likely be grouped together on market data reports since they are both CFOs. All the market data I’ve ever seen was so broad it was close to a 100-150k gap which makes it pretty useless and the issue comes when everyone “feels” they deserve the higher end regardless of actual facts.
Appreciate this perspective thank you! Agree that it’s normally a very wide range.
I would focus on not thinking of it as combative but instead as confident. You're armed with data, and a lot of hiring managers are trying to get you to work for as little money as possible. Go in with strength and confidence so you don't get taken advantage of.
Love this reframing. Thank you!
