That having a good idea matters more than being good at selling ideas.

The biggest misconception is that the big award shows = the best work and best agencies.
It’s been a real eye opener to see how scammy they are now, and how the top top agencies don’t really put as much weight in awards as they used to.
The misconception that I’ve joined a family.
Don’t talk to your Mother like that
That it’s anything like what was described in “Hey Whipple” anymore. I didn’t realize there’s a reason why that book mostly cites ads almost as old as my parents.
You know what, got this book in college, never read it. Must be why I’m so good now.
Hey Whipple, squeeze it yourself!
I’m a woman in the biz for 15 years. Where shall we begin?
I can’t disagree with that. I have definitely experienced the mean-girl takedown. But they’re also the best at lifting other women up. Like everyone of every gender identification, women are a mixed bag. I’ve also had male managers champion me and male managers undermine me. When women come after other women it definitely feels worse.
That anybody really cares what we do.
They kept talking me it was all about the work. Believing this was my biggest downfall.
What’s it about? What does this mean?
That our job is 100% about giving the client what they want.
That might be the case in MARKETING. But as a creative we ride that fine line with what we can sell in (and convince them it’ll work) and what WE think is cool. No one is trying to win Effie’s, simple as that

Agreed on the first bit - We shouldn’t be giving them what they want, we should be trying our hardest to give them what they need. Though I’d argue our barometer shouldn’t be what we think is COOL. Our job is to use cool (among other levers) for an objective. We aren’t artists, we have an actual goal.
“Do you watch Mad Men? My husband is like Don Draper.”
the misconception that i make a lot of money because i work at a top agency (or in advertising in general.) i make 65k and can’t pay my bills, overdue credit cards with 20k, 100k in student loans………… but you know, suffer for the “amazing creative opportunities” right? lol i’m pretty over it

I hear ya, and that sucks - but the hard work will pay off and sooner than later you’ll get a couple fairly significant bumps. Godspeed!
