I’ve spent my entire career in FP&A at large organizations. For those who’ve done it, how difficult is the transition to a small org/ start-up where you have accountability over most of the finance function/ processes are barely established? I’ve had a couple of recruiters reach out and I’m always quick to say no, but maybe I should be more open?

It depends on how comfortable you are with developing SOPs for the company’s entire accounting and finance function. If you’ve only focused on one aspect of a company’s financials (FP&A), I’d say it’ll be a pretty difficult transition. Unless you understand day-to-day accounting functions and the software used to achieve having accurate financial
statements stakeholders can use to make sound financial decisions.

Ya that’s what I’m worried about - I’ve always been pretty siloed and mainly on the expense side

Out of curiosity. How would a company view a potential candidate who has a period of unemployment to study for the CPA. I am considering to start studying for the exam but I know I would need to leave my employer in order to give 110%. I am contemplating the idea of at least passing one part while employed. Then leaving my employer to study FAR. I am considering to leave my current employer anyways, so it’s more of how my future employer would view that lapse.
