I’ve worked for two consulting firms (one major government contractor and another tier 2 firm) and I’m still only 3 years into my career, so am not a senior person. I’ve always found the work and the people OK and nice, and it was just an industry that lined up well with my degree. But I’ve found working at these big companies to utterly soul draining—Just the day-day stress and grind over meaningless tasks, etc. Could looking at smaller more niche/boutique firms be worthwhile and different?

Basically same boat but add 2 YOE. I’m only looking at smaller firms because you only wear one hat at a big contractor and barely get to do much due to bureaucracy or feel connected at all to your work IMHO. Smaller firms help you upskill fast and get to touch more parts of the business based on what I understand

They will also fking crush you with hats, are often way more cliquey, will fire/eliminate you on a dime and typically have *significantly* more varied cultures

Do Leidos, SAIC, and other mostly-fed consulting businesses pay bonuses to all levels? If so, what does a typical bonus target look like? Booz Allen does not pay bonuses until you get to the Senior Associate level (1 step below Director) and I think that impacts employee performance and work ethic pretty dramatically. I’m wondering if not paying bonuses is common to federal contracting because of how the contracts or priced, or if this is something unique to Booz Allen.
