What city?

Relocating from Seattle to Michigan, where I am licensed to practice law.

Oh thanks I’d appreciate it!

My main questions are: (1) total estimated set-up costs to start a solo tax/estate planning practice; (2) estimated recurring costs, necessary vs. discretionary; (3) useful resources/services for hiring any billing, support staff, etc. at minimum I expect I’ll need an experienced paralegal or legal secretary to handle some of the administrative matters that I have no experience with. (4) Estimated learning curve for someone with sophisticated US federal/international experience but only academic experience in estate planning, wills/trusts. (5) also particularly curious about marketing resources and costs.

Anything is helpful. Thank you!

Where are you currently based, OP? I think NYC is a good place to start. But the rent is pretty expensive.

Join Laura Cowan’s 2-hr lifestyle lawyer class. It’s $4,500 and will get you totally up to speed to open your own estate planning firm. It’s catered to estate planning attorneys. I’m enrolled right now and it’s great!

Also you need to invest in wealthcounsel. It has videos to teach you and is a drafting software. $500 initiation fee and $500/mo. Foretrust is less expensive but doesn’t offer lessons.

Also become a notary. Many banks don’t accept documents notarized by an attorney’s signature (even if the law says attorneys can notarize documents).

How do you plan to get clients?

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?

Has anyone left, or had an associate leave, a small firm and remain of counsel or in some other capacity to assist with a handful of matters going to trial? How did you structure compensation? Don’t want to leave my boss in the lurch with some big cases going to trial at end of year but also can’t use those as excuses to stay. Would like to offer a reasonable proposal. Even if boss turns it down, I’ll feel better about knowing I offered to help.

Hi. I’m in need of advice and encouragement. I’m currently working as a public defender(2nd year) but I would love to pursue a solo private practice. I would like to leave the public defender because I am ready to make more money and I am no longer feeling the fulfillment I once felt. I have a family and work-life balance is a priority. What is a good way to gain experience in other areas of law as a solo practitioner? What areas of law are best for maintaining a work-life balance?

Am I missing something with Quickbooks? I’ve been hearing a lot of firms use it so I signed up to try it but it’s quite confusing with the trust accounting. Looks like I need the advanced version but that’s like $180 a month. We already do billing through Tabs3.
