My one year anniversary of opening my own solo firm is next week. Ideas for how to recognize this milestone on social media/Linkedin, etc? I do blog regularly but I'm struggling to figure out the best angle.

You could do something simple like “One year down and many more to go!” or reflect on something you want to focus on for year two.

Congratulations!

Congratulations!!! 🎉 it’s a celebration of something big. Feel welcomed to relish in it, and express your humble gratitude for it. Maybe talk about the ups and downs; proudest moment(s)/not so proud; most difficult moments; the moments you felt most empowered and fulfilled; reflect over the trials and tribulations of being a lawyer AND a business owner - they are two different jobs!! Talk about the expected and not so expected. Be open about your true experiences, good and bad; I think it’ll be super relatable, inspiring, and a teaching moment for newbies/future solo lawyers.

I saw this and thought I'd share. What do you say? “Diversity hiring does not mean a lower bar for diverse candidates. They still need to interview and pass the hiring bar. Therefore, diversity hiring is not unfair to other non-diverse applicants."

I’m hiring a Technical Recruitment Lead for our team. We’re a health technology company with offices in Canada & the US. We’re nearly 900 employees and reached 700Mil in revenue this year. Our sights are set on reaching unicorn status in the next few years 🦄. How do you handle billing disputes? Already feel like we’re a steal compared to other firms, but it’s the pits when clients kvetch about the bill after working hard on their matters. For five figure disputes, anyone recommend collections? Don’t really want to institute retainers, especially since it doesn’t seem common for our practice area.

Does anybody have a resource available for pricing and billing? I am 2 years out of law school, working as a corporate attorney, and wanting to go solo. Ideally, I will take my corporate client with me, but am working to build work on the side during the transition. Also, do you have any recommendations for document preparation? I would like to draft wills, trusts, and other estate planning documents, but would like a resource that has boilerplate provisions to utilize as a reference.

I work at a small, 3 lawyer firm. One of the lawyers is not barred in the state we practice. Because of this, the managing attorney has been having him draft motions and other legal documents and use my name and bar number and having me file them because I will have to appear in court for the matter. Is this normal? I am not provided time to review the materials before I file them so I end up working longer days because I am nervous to file something using my name and bar number.

Young solo here w/ a question about fees: 1. A local solo criminal defense attorney has offered to pay me to go and make appearances before the Court on some of her cases to make announcements. (For example, “ready when reached”). I’m open to doing this and this attorney is asking what my fee would be? Does anyone have thoughts or opinions on what a reasonable fee would be to do something like this? Hourly? Flat Fee? 2. I want to ensure this is ethical. I don’t see an issue with this. Thoughts?

Hi. I’m in need of advice and encouragement. I’m currently working as a public defender(2nd year) but I would love to pursue a solo private practice. I would like to leave the public defender because I am ready to make more money and I am no longer feeling the fulfillment I once felt. I have a family and work-life balance is a priority. What is a good way to gain experience in other areas of law as a solo practitioner? What areas of law are best for maintaining a work-life balance?

Managing attorneys in small firms - how much do you make?

I'm in South Florida. Currently a 6 year associate at a small firm (~12 attorneys, 55 staff). I'm objectively a good candidate for it. Question is... what's a good salary for that position? What do you make? Thanks.
