Just out of curiosity, are any Paraeducators (or teachers) working on transitional goals with their students? I work with the sped population and I just started working with high school student. I’m looking for outside resources to teach my students independent living skills. This is a new area for me and any guidance would be helpful!

Does your school have a caseworker assigned to your student? Transition goals should be included in their IEP. I work with a physically disabled student entering high school next year and the IEP lists several things the team should be working on to facilitate independence. I am lucky that even though I’m new in the role, the student’s parents are very engaged and I am able to be involved the meetings.

I would begin with the SPED teachers to see what goals they feel are most important/applicable to the student’s capabilities. There are tons of books and videos on life skills. It’s tough being assigned to a new student until you’ve spent enough time with them to develop a good working relationship.
Good luck to you, you obviously care very much to be asking!

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.

what kind of professional development does your district provide you?

I need to ask a question of special Ed teachers. A student put her clothes in the toilet… Is it allowable to make that student put the wet clothes on?

How do we feel about sped aides constantly being on their phones when with students? It’s pervasive in our building and is driving me crazy. Yes there are down times but this is beyond that. Am I expecting too much as a fellow aide for everyone to be as engaged as I am?

I am in self-contained. Our students are never sent home even tho they are obviously ill. Only projectile vomiting sends a student home. So then we staff get sick because of our close contact, toileting, etc, and have to use our sick days and then run out of sick days. Anyone else experiencing this?

We paras are in a cross-category self-contained autism/BD/LD/ED grades 2-4. We are hit, scratched, kicked. We are 6 adults and 10 kids. We work 8:30-3:30. Half hour lunch and no breaks. Is this typical? Short lunch and no breaks?

I am in a self-contained cross category room. Grades 2-4. We have kiddos who need to be placed in therapeutic schools but those schools are understaffed due to Covid — their staff found other jobs during the shutdown—and so can’t take them. Several of our kids are huge. I have been slammed hard on the back, chased around the room to hit me, kicked, bitten, clawed, hair pulled. Is anyone else experiencing heightened behaviors?
