Chicago gets terrible press, the country loves imagining it’s a literal war zone out here.
Winters suck, but in general chicago is awesome.
Live in Chicago too, crime is definitely bad. Just don’t walk late and be aware of your surroundings at all times

Media overhypes things. City is fine, have lived here for 10 years and I’ve always felt safe. As long as you’re not blackout and flinging around your phone and wallet, you’ll be ok!
Generally this stuff happens at like 2-3am. I’m sure I could find scary stats about crime in any large city. If you feel safe in nyc you’ll feel safe in Chicago

I recently moved to Seattle and downplayed the whole homeless/ drug problem, so believe what you hear. It’s exactly as portrayed.

As if the country only has Chicago or NYC. If you’re actually “desperate” to move out go to Orlando.
Or maybe not be struck by media sensationalism whose sole purpose is to get your clicks for ad money. And visit these places and see for yourself.
If you live in the city or suburbs, you’ll be fine. There is crime in every city. Stop being so dramatic.

Hot take: as long as it’s confined to black on black violence in the south side, the city won’t care, and privileged (white) consultants will tell you “it’s not that bad”
Chicago is a tale of two cities where 1) it’s an absolute travesty we accept it and 2) it’s somehow wrong to point out that fact
Chief
It’s even worse than that — targeted programs like installing Shot Spotters and assigning focused patrols were decried as racist. Somehow dedicating greater public safety resources to these communities is more racist than just allowing violence to run rampant
I’m going to disagree here. I lived in Detroit, Cincinnati, Indianapolis and now Chicago (north west side) and I’ve never been more afraid for my life and my children’s lives. We moved to the north side because it’s supposedly “safer” and I’ve experienced multiple drivebys right at the intersection of my home. My partner is afraid as well and he’s FROM the south side (dangerous part)
The people commenting to not live in fear I’m sure also locked themselves in their house for an entire 1+ year 🤣
lived here for 5 years in the city-city. havnt heard a single gun shot. havnt seen a single violent crime.
should add ive also lived in the suburbs of chicago and visited the city regularly my whole life. Seen some unintentional crime. IE someone opened a car door while a biker was going by and biker got rekt. Seen someone run a red light and get in a fender bender. saw some drunk dude hitting on some hot girl and her bf decked him. but nothing that i’ve seen on the news. just be smart. don’t be walking around alone at 3am. Use uber.
Have lived here my whole life. There are neighborhoods that are great. Avoid south side and you’ll be fine

You live in NYC and are worried about Chicago? My dude...

can you share what made you want to move to Chicago or what you are looking for? I'm sure we can share some other options if you provide your criteria! The U.S. is a big place.

Been living in NYC for 4 years and want somewhere new/nyc getting too expensive is the primary reason why I’m moving. I realized I like the idea of NYC/the city life (nice boujee apartment, nice dinners, going out all the time), not anything about the actual city.
I’m not sure what exactly I’m looking for (at a weird point in my life, also the vibe for career too lol not sure where I want that to go).
Chicago seemed like a good balance of everything. Will still be paying a lot for rent as I’m willing to pay what I currently pay in NYC, but will be lower after my rent raises at the end of my lease. Everything else will be cheaper though (groceries, going out, entertainment, etc). Not that much of an outdoorsy person but I do appreciate the occasional outdoor activity outside of the park - I think the beaches cover that part. Based on what I’ve seen and read, nightlife and food is great. I don’t mind the 3-4 brutal winter months that people dislike about Chicago. What I do dislike/what I’m concerned about is 1. The (potential) crime 2. It probably doesn’t make sense to own a car here, as much as I want walkability, I do miss driving and not having to rely on public transportation.
My second choice in city was Houston, not really about the weather though, nor how dead the downtown area is

Chicago gets a lot of negative bad press because Barack Obama, a black man, is from the city. If you want to believe all you hear, then go for it, but there’s literally people in the comments who live there who are telling you otherwise so do with that information what you will
Oh that’s why you think it gets bad press 🤣

I live in Chicago, and yea it is dangerous. No, you won’t see too much crime daily if you know your surroundings and don’t go to river north at night. I don’t go anywhere without a gun, I have a conceal carry. There are carjackings every single day. People get robes every single day. There have been an enormous amount of young people missing, and later found in the lake or the river. So maybe it isn’t worse than Detroit, but it’s not a safe city. Again, I’d you know your surroundings and try to steer clear of the south side, river north at night, then you may be fine. If you have a car, get theft insurance. If you live in a house, get cameras.
Omg OP are you me

OP, in response to Houston being your alt: yes, if you like the hustle & bustle of New York that we all see on TV/social media (I've never been to NYC), then I'm not sure you'll like it here. Downtown isn't "dead" but it's definitely quiet. Especially now since so many people still WFH. My cousin from Toronto visited recently and wasn't able to adjust at all. Literally was asking "where are all the people?" 😆. That being said, this is definitely not a boring city. You just won't see any pedestrians (except at the parks) bc everyone drives, no walkability here. And nightlife is good, you just gotta hit the right clubs, the ones that fit your vibe.
Rising Star
Exactly this. Houston doesn’t have a centralized “vibe” the way other major cities go. There are more or less three main area out of downtown that you’d need to *drive* to in order to experience nightlife and mingle with locals. It’s just different. Not for many people if used to life on either coast.
