Just signed an offer with 67% increase in base. When do I hand in my notice with my current employer? Do I have to wait background check to clear to hand in my notice?

Depends what your relationship is with risk. Do you play it safe or live fast and loose? Also, do you want to take a couple weeks off between jobs? The safest okay is to wait for the background check to clear

like

For a second, I thought this was going to be the classic, " should I take the job" post.

Normally, I would say doesn't matter, but with job market and economy in general in a weird place, safety should be too consideration. Wait until you know you can start

Are you on a visa? Not until approval letter is digitally received

No visa? Not until background check is complete

Congratulations!!!!! 💰💸🤑

Personally, I am risk adverse when it comes to employment and would wait.

I also view it from a contractual perspective. If the validity of that offer letter is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check- then you would be giving notice based on an offer letter that is not yet valid.

I didn't notice the typo, thank you!

67%??? As soon as possible!!

My concern with handing in notice till after background check completion is that I may have very little time between jobs. I’m thinking about handing in notice now so that I’ll have 3 weeks in between to spend time with family.

@D3 - tried this approach with a startup a few months back. Different situation in that they wanted me to wait 12mos before including equity, so I countered with a request for 12mos comp in the event of a liquidation event - they balked, so I declined.

I handed in my notice 2 weeks before I wanted to quit, but I had a trip planned during my week off, knew the offer wouldn’t get rescinded (hiring like crazy and moving to B4), and had recently passed 2 background checks. I was still worried when the check took longer than anticipated.

It all depends on your risk tolerance, but I would recommend making sure you still are able to provide 2 weeks, and maybe talk to your future employer about extending the start date in the event the background check takes longer than anticipated.

Wait

Wait until the background check is done. Sometimes they can drag on longer than you think. Your new firm should also tell you when they want you to start, it maybe based on their pay periods etc. You should talk to your recruiter about it. Unless you’re 100% sure background check will be fine and don’t care if you sit around unpaid for a few weeks then go for it.
