Unless I'm paid for the extra hours i put in, I ain't gonna let work encroach on my life.
See, everything I do, brings revenue to the org I work for. If they are benefiting from it, i deserve a share of that too.
If they want me to put in extra hours, they're more than welcome to compensate me for it.
I wasn't always like this though. It happened around three years ago. I got back to work after a three day leave after I had my wisdom teeth removed. The project I had put my heart and soul in, working till 2 in the morning, starting again at 8- they handed my team over to a person who joined in my absence.
I wasn't doing poorly, the review I received was full of wows and yays, the client sent out a mail addressed to me, with even the partner in cc, mentioning how their team found my support crucial and how they looked forward to working with me again.
And you know why I was replaced? Because my manager didn't *feel* like I was giving the project my 100% and the new joiner seemed more passionate.
Just in case you're interested, I pulled that project from a 20% completion to a 85% completion in 70% of the available time because we were falling behind the targets due to lack of developers. After I left, they had to take an extension for the work left. And no, I was not due to re-working, I kept in touch with the partner, offering my support in case there was rework needed. He was quite clear that the time they now needed was to complete the leftover work.
It kinda ticked me off though. I stopped taking work personally. Stopped assuming it was important. Have since been promoted twice. And every person on my team knows that I sign off at 6. Not a minute later, not a minute earlier. And I've taken notes from SBI too, no work whatsoever in my lunch hour.
Take your pick, kid.
Thts waht I want everyone to realize. Work must be limited to work. And hard working people are replaced bcs some other person have been hired on low wages then you. Thts behind story for almost everyone but we stay in illusion that my performance was lacking etc...
Anyway I feel happy to read your comment as you've learned the work boundaries and following too as you mentioned.
It’s quiet quitting, I guess that’s what you mean. In that case, it means to draw certain boundaries within your work wherein you don’t push your limits. Basically, just go to office, fuck around, and come back. No, I do not follow that, driven by some strong work ethic! Plus, I am ambitious.🤣
