Ladies - my GF is turning 30 in a couple months. What are your thoughts on a Cartier watch? Was thinking Tank or Santos. How would you feel with either of those? Or go an entirely different route?

Perfect 👍🏼. Timeless style, well built but brand cache outside the watch world and generally very few people dislike the style

like

I like the Tank. Very classic, well made, iconic. Can be dressed up or down but get the SS strap. 27F. Absolutely adore it. But you won’t know until you try on in boutique!

The Santos is traditionally more of a masculine watch FYI, in case that matters. If you want more of an obviously feminine watch, you might consider the Panthere but it’s more expensive than the Tank. Tank, design wise, is most gender neutral.

like

Santos is more masculine but my wife wears it and loves it. She likes the industrial masculine look in watches on women and it spoke to her. I think a Tank is less likely to be controversial but it might be nice to take her there and say, choose one 😉

Check with her. My SO had a strong preference against square watches so Cartier went out the window. One thing that I did that worked well: I took photos of the watches that I was considering and removed the branding/text from the dial - she picked based on these. Keeps some of the surprise of the gift while making sure it’s a design she likes and will wear regularly.

like

I would be truly delighted, especially if there is a reason my SO has picked it out for me (e.g. I like traditional classy things). For context, I’m a 28 f, feminine, with a disposal income of around $160k per annum.

Of the 2, I prefer Tank.

Good to know regarding the Tank

like

Tank is a classic, but my wife preferred the ballon bleu. She saw one out in the wild and decided on the moon phase.

I agree on figuring out what she wants vs just surprising her, but only you know your relationship. If it’s an option, I would make the buying experience part of the purchase. Bring her along to try them on, talk about them, etc.. and you’ll find out what she likes along the way.

like

I just bought my fiancé a tank for her 30th and she loved it. I think it looks really smart!

like

If my wife wouldn’t break nice things I’d get her a tank. But alas she breaks things and got a shinola

like

I bought my wife a Rolex Submariner for her 30th. It was what she wanted.

like

I think depends more on her style. Agree the tank can be dressed up or down and so can the Santos. If she’s more of a minimalist style I would say tank. If she likes to layer or less minimalistic I would say Santos. I’m a female who has a Santos and don’t feel like it’s masculine at all but I tend to like watches that are 36 mm+. Tank is not my style personally.

I was also deciding between the tank and the santos. I ended up with a Solarbeat tank and I really love it. I also tend to go for watches with larger dials (and come to think of it, I much prefer round dials), but got the tank in a L and it’s perfect. It’s a classic and looks good on everyone, literally can’t go wrong. Would deffo recommend it 👍🏽

Can’t go wrong with those.

Partners - Do you ever take vacations?

I have been at my current firm for about 1.5 years, and in that entire time the partner in my group hasn't been out of the office a single time. Is that normal? I can't tell if it's standard for big law partners to not take time off, if the dynamics for my group may be different (only 1 partner in the entire group), or it the partner I work with is just a masochist.

Has anyone seen Omega’s new Seamaster? Thoughts? I mean the only thing that’s stopped me from going 20,000 ft underwater is the right watch…unfortunately at 45.5mm in diameter and 56mm lug to lug, it’s too big for my small wrists. Oh well, guess I won’t be going underwater. Just kidding haha - I think it’s cool and I do like that they ditched the HEV
