Just my $0.02, but I rarely feel like pulling kids out of school as a means of discipline is effective. Likely these kids come from homes that are already unsupportive or uninvolved with their education, why put them even further down the rung? Of course there would always be exceptions to this, but it feels extreme to place someone in a lesser school or expel them when where they need to be is in class. If it were me I'd make them come to school more ;P lol

I think I agree! Also there is no three strikes, or a warning, just first time offence boom you are gone!
Seems pretty extreme. If they want to put a ton of time and resources into something, their mental health needs seem more important.

If they really want to crack down on it like that, how will it be enforced? Do those kids who are expelled or sent away get adequate teaching or are they dumped in front of a computer all day? Also, how soon before many schools would be empty? 😉

I worry about the services the kids in alternative schools will get. Plus, is it a placement until they graduate? Will their diploma say it’s an alternative school? If so, there are post-secondary institutions that will not take one and studies have shown that kids with a GED or alternative diploma do not fare nearly as well in college, for example. That can have a big effect on a kid’s future.
They are removed for only three or four weeks to an Alternative School in our district. A certified principal and certified teachers are in the room. Students also have a certified special education teacher who provides accommodations. The smoking products can and will trigger an asthma attack and possibly cause loss of life if no inhaler is on campus. The vape that a student used in class affected over half the class and only one student had an inhaler at school. The nurse had to take the students outside to get their oxygen levels up. Please know that our ULTIMATE DUTY is to keep the children safe. Can you imagine the horror of a student dying at school of an asthma attack because another one brought a vape and used it in class? The children that have asthma, allergies and sinusitis were very ill. Keep the children safe.

There are two things I see in this case:
1. I bet a policy already exists against vapes in school, yet it didn’t stop the kid from bringing it and doing it in class. The policy only takes effect after they’ve been caught. It’s like we all know there’s a speed limit, yet we violate it and only get punished if caught.
2. Your school needs to be better equipped for those kids with asthma if there are that many of them that it affected half the class and there were no inhalers. Every kid with a breathing issue should have an inhaler at school with their name on it—mandatory. It wouldn’t hurt the school to have a couple spares to be used in emergencies with parent permission.
If it’s our “ultimate duty” to keep kids safe, what would happen if your school had, say, some sort of gas leak or chemical spill and a kid died due to lack of an inhaler? The lawsuit would be huge…

What I see happen so often is that the students do not keep up with work, and there are no behavior changes when they return.
