IMO earlier rather than later because you are more fungible. And you can always lateral as a midlevel if you want a fresh start.

Pros and cons at all levels so might as well do it when it works for you.

I think you should get pregnant when you want and when it makes sense for your life, and the rest will work itself out. A firm that messes things up for you because you are living your life is probably not the right firm for you and probably also a hard firm to have a family at.

(Currently pregnant with my first baby as a 36 year old partner after trying for two years with an unexplained infertility diagnosis and 3 miscarriages. Partnership makes some parts of planning leave smoother for sure, although there are some things that are more difficult too because of the increased responsibilities. I’d still just recommend living your life how you want.)

When you and your partner decide or when you have a steamy night and pop up pregnant unexpectedly. Don’t let a job dictate when you should get pregnant. I got pregnant in my second year of practicing law — during my clerkship. It was the best experience.

Don’t wait to live your life. Had mine as a 4th year and as a 7th year, lateraled in between, which isn’t necessary by any means, but 2021 was a good year to move. Professionally, I was in a good place both times in terms of being slightly ahead of class year performance-wise (to mitigate any intrusive thoughts about falling behind) and having established good sources of work who were happy to have me come back. I wouldn’t say it has pushed me out of line for partnership, but there are definitely gaps in my BD stemming from Covid, Baby 1, lateral, then Baby 2.

Depends on your unique situation, but I have gotten the advice that midlevel is a good time to go on mat leave.

P1 - this is so true! Going through a difficult fertility journey trying to have a family at 35. I wish someone told me to freeze eggs when I was 30! OP- don’t take your fertility for granted

I didn’t think about my career. I just knew I was not getting knocked up past 37/38. I got pregnant 4 months after 37 with my second and now I got 2 little ones and a decent career as a solo. It all depends on what you want. I don’t think you can quantify the “best” time.

Just a personal choice. I’m 41 now and don’t plan on getting pregnant again.
