Last month, I led a project that completely flopped—we missed key deadlines, went over budget, and the client wasn’t happy with the final outcome. I’ve been replaying every decision I made, wondering what I could’ve done differently. My team has been supportive, but I still feel like I let them down, and my confidence has taken a major hit. I know failure happens, but this one feels personal, and bouncing back hasn’t been easy. Have you ever experienced a project failure like this? How did you move forward without letting it define you or your work?

Everyone bombs a project at some point in their career. I know it sounds cliche, but use it as a learning experience for next time.

Completely flopped on one a while back, maybe 5 months ago. I took it hard, was my first project where I really took the lead. After all was said and done and I was at that reflection stage, I got a pen and paper and started writing out all the issues and how they could effectively been solved. Agree that it is a learning process for better and worse.

I’ve definitely been there. It’s hard not to take it personally when a project doesn’t go as planned, especially when you’ve invested so much in it. For me, it helped to have an honest conversation with the team and leadership to identify the lessons learned. Slowly, I started focusing on the wins and the steps I could take to grow from it. Don't let one setback define you!

I work in Fintech so this may be a different term in in the finance world, but I would actually talk to your team and possibly the client about doing a retrospective so that you can hear what you can do better next time and incorporate it going forward. Keep your head up. We’ve all been there.
