Leaving after mat leave: I’m currently on mat leave and I have come to the conclusion I don’t want to continue in big law. How long after coming back would you wait to give notice? I get back early December and fiscal year ends 12/31.

I would wait until after bonuses are paid if you’ll be eligible for one. Other than that quit whenever you’re ready. It’s not uncommon for people to leave immediately following the end of their parental leave.

I would look at whether you'd have to repay any of the compensation you get for maternity leave. Some places require you to work 30 days after return, etc.

This. Check your employment contract. Sometimes there is a clawback provision. Mine was 90 days.

Like others here have said, make sure there's no claw back, but if you're near year end, I would also wait for a prorated bonus.

I resigned the moment I got into the office after Mat leave. It seems like fairly common practice

Out of curiosity, how did you come to that conclusion?

Ha, this could take long to respond! But in short I have the opportunity to join a family business which would give me more flexibility to be with my children as they grow up (this is not my first child). I love my law job but it doesn’t spark joy and I want to be more present and flexible in being able to be with the kids. I think this is the short answer!

I've been working at my current job for about a year now and I'm finally beginning to understand how the company works.

It's not easy, though. It's a small company, which means there are only a few of us in each department. There is no dedicated training team, so we all have to learn new things on the fly through trial-and-error or by asking our coworkers for help. The management team seems to be pretty hands off when it comes to project management and project direction, so it's up to us engineers to figure out how we want to spend our time and who we want to work with.
