Like other recent posts I’m really struggling with my next career move. I’m a senior in a biglaw firm and have zero partnership prospects. I’m also in a specialist PG that’s really been struggling to find work given deals have been slow the last two years. I really want to move to PT but it’s not realistic at my current firm (main partner has made that clear). How do I start shopping this at other firms? I’ve talked with a few recruiters but market is slow and groups mainly wants mids assoc.

I’d give it some time with the market but keep looking. Are you open to other options, like in house or is there a similar practice you’d be interested in?

I think a lot of firms have a minimum time you have to be there for before going PT, though so I’d also keep that in mind (and that PT doesn’t mean you’ll work that much less).

Ugh I’m sorry about that. I would bring it up up front then and go from there. I think you’ll have some firms turn it down which is good to know right away if that’s your plan anyway. It might take longer but at least you’ll have it negotiated when it finally happens… or not, maybe it’ll be quick! Which for your sake I hope because I know how absolutely discouraging a job search can be!!

I’m in exactly the same position. Considering a retool to an adjacent practice at a boutique that touts lifestyle. Confident the partnership prospects would be better but not super confident the hours would be as much of an improvement as they are claiming.

Agreed. And while I am very confident parter is not in the cards for me, I don’t have much clarity/visibility for how much longer my current BL firm is fine with me hanging around and/or if counsel is a path likely available to me here. I suspect the answer is market dependent.

I think the only way to know is to get out there. You may also have to adjust expectations.

Anyone have any reliable free resources (CLEs, practice guides) for tax law and estate/probate/wills? I don’t have the money for anything paid, but I’d like to selfstudy these areas in the meantime. My state bar and libraries don’t appear to have a practice series or anything like that, so it’s been hard finding something viable other than the ole’ Google and pray.

When renting a condo from an owner, I was asked to pay a $150 move-in fee to the building which I thought makes sense, but then I am being told to also pay a $500 non refundable move in fee to the owner but he is not wanting a security deposit. Is this normal? Seems like $500 down the drain but not sure if this is normal
