Another attribute rarely discussed is the charging rate for a standard range vs long range/performance. Standard range has a maximum of 32 amps for a L2 charger while the LR/Performance models have a maximum rate of 48 amps for an L2 charger. This may not matter to some but should be called out.
Why are you looking to buy a Tesla as opposed to an electric car from a traditional car manufacturer?
The build quality leaves a lot to be desired, the "minimalist design" is just an excuse to charge you more money for less stuff (like no turn signal stock? Seriously wtf), and their claim of "autopilot full self driving" is borderline fraudulent. Not to mention that Elon will probably drop the prices again putting you further underwater in your loan, which could put you in a sticky financial situation if something happens and you need to sell.
For that kind of money, you could go with Polestar (Volvo) or get a used Mercedes electric sedan and get way more luxury, or a used electric BMW and get something that feels more sporty.
If OP can’t charge at home then Tesla is the clear winner over anything else on that alone
New Model Y coming out soon.
Oh wow I see it is on the site. The dude at Tesla lied to me then lol
Rising Star
Assuming it’s low mileage, a used Model Y is likely the best option. Peak battery degradation happens within the first 2-3K miles, and the hit is about 10%. It happens no matter what. Assuming you’re keeping your battery between 10% and 90% charged, your ongoing battery degradation is roughly 1% every 50K miles.
Just doing some quick searches in my local area (DC metro) you’re going to save about $10-12K if you choose a low mileage used option.
Since Tesla has been cutting the new car prices, used car values have plummeted.
Very good point on the battery. Appreciate that insight!
Primary difference are AWD, speed and range. If you don’t care about any of those then not really any difference. I think the performance has a slightly upgraded like leather dash but that’s only thing if I’m not mistaken
Having owned a Model Y Performance, the car is fun to drive but has a punishing ride. Otherwise we love the car.
With the current Model Y still not having received a similar refresh as the current Model 3, any reason you wouldn’t purchase a gently used Model Y for considerable cost savings?
Taking a glance right now and I see a 2022 Model Y Performance (~15K miles) with the following financial requirements:
Down payment: $7500
Monthly Payment: $600
Eh. I think I’d still lean towards the 2024 for preference.
Have you confirmed that you ll receive fed tax credit based on your income? Also I think Tesla is marking down the cost at the time of delivery for this amount so that helps lowering the total cost.
Yes :)
Base if you just need basic transportation, don't like heavy acceleration, and don't want AWD. Long range gets you AWD, more acceleration, and a better radio. I believe Y has acceleration boost for $1500, which puts it on par with the Performance. Performance adds more acceleration over Long Range, track mode, slightly better brakes, and larger wheels/tires which can also be a downside as they are more suspectable to damage with thr lower profile tires (tires are also more expensive).
4.5yr owner of a 3 Performance and it's been a great ride and I basically never want a ICE car for DD or even in most respects, a fun car due to the torque and DD benefits.
Not a fan of Tesla, but if it turns your crank, then the smartest would be long range
