looking for roles in tax attorney roles, specifically controversy either fed or state, and/or tax planning. Does anyone have good recommendations? Also has anyone successfully transitioned into big law coming from a consulting/accounting firm?

Just throwing out something to consider, I’ve seen more flexibility/openness to retools coming in as a junior for ECEB groups. Not true tax roles, but related and could be a good leverage of your tax background at the accounting/consulting firm.

Good luck!

I made the transition from accounting to biglaw but did a boutique in between. FWIW, people at my firm make fun of accounting firms all the time and see them as being beneath them so it’s definitely a tough mindset to change.

Since the implementation of AI tools in financial and accounting modeling is underway and if accounting firms continue to burgeon into law, they may be getting the last laugh in the tax space

Depending on the firm, controversy alone may not be enough to be a stand-alone area. Friend of mine in BL came out of DOJ, should have been partner but never made it b/c their firm just didn't do enough controversy work.

Food for thought.

Lately, I've been hearing a lot from my peers about how sales isn't a real profession.
I work at a tech startup and it mostly comprises developers. They can't stop emphasizing their importance in the food chain and I can't figure if I'm too humble or they're too arrogant.
This yapping comes from people I've known since college. I have successfully blocked all such negativity but wanted to know if anyone here has faced such scenarios.
P.S: I've already accepted an offer above my expectations

Hello everyone!
My current company's notice period is 3 months, due to which I'm unable to get any interview calls.
Resigning without an offer is not possible at the moment due to family responsibilities.

Do you know any companies which will accept three months of notice period?
Or how do I tackle this situation?

Your suggestions are highly welcomed!

Thank you in advance!

Debevoise Hong Kong is hiring a tax associate (2nd to 5th years, but there may be flexibility in class year), ideally with experience in funds tax. Comp is the latest DPW/Cravath scale plus a COLA each year and moving costs. I'm currently there, and I'm happy to chat if anyone is interested.

Anyone have any thoughts on a fair salary for a part time virtual tax prep-focused position? I’ve been made an offer for south of 800 hours/year (fluctuating for seasonal ebb and flow, of course), and I’m curious whether it’s a decent offer or not. I have 13 years of experience in a big box franchise where I’ve handled complex returns from day 1. 30% of my workload has been 1120/1120S/1065 and the rest higher-level 1040s and a few 1041s & 990s. I’ll be bringing 75-100 clients with me.

Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?

When the IRS (e.g., a RO/AO/Examiner) calls or writes a letter… How do you verify that it’s really the IRS and not a scam? I’m new to tax law and I’m worried that I’m going to respond to/answer a scam and give away client info (or my own tax preparer info). I don’t think my worry is unfounded due to the tremendous amount of tax/IRS scam out there but it would be nice to hear from some of y’all so that I’m not so worried about it…

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)
