Awww. Im wiping my tears with cash right now.
Anyone that says a certain department isn’t important is probably wildly insecure.
Sales is often the backbone of any successful organization.

The tough part about sales is that people feel as if they can denigrate us....and lawyers. It just goes with the territory, but if you play your cards right, it's the fastest path to financial independence. Trust me on that one. At the risk of repeating myself, there are only 3 pillars or power at a startup: 1) those who develop the product 2) those who deploy the product 3) those who sell the product. Peter Drucker said "the purpose of a business is to create and keep a customer". Your job is to do both, and it's the most important job at a startup because it's so difficult to do.
Chances are you make way more than the developers.
It’s a fact that “sales reps” at tech companies are more like project managers than typical sales people. Your job is not (just) to give a sales pitch, but to analyze a problem, suggest the right solutions and bring together the right people, SAs, management in order to make an informed decision.
If you never worked in Sales, you don’t know how complex and stressful it can be.
The best salespeople are part visionaries, investigators, mathematicians, persuaders, competitors, presenters, teachers, advisors, coordinators, accountants, paralegals, architects, and leaders. I’m sure I’m missing some. Do any of these well and you can sell, do several and you can really sell, do all of them and you are unstoppable
You should be asking yourself whether you’re too sensitive or too proud for caring what they say. Ignore the noise, make your money, and move on.
I echo what Regional Director said above.
Without developers there is no product.
Without sales there is no company.
Both are required. Both are skills that take years to master. They are vastly different, but none is more important than the other. Especially in a start up where everyone has so much influence on the business process.
Ask them to elaborate when they say something similar.
Every profession is fake. Who needs all this crap the market makes and sells anyways? At least we go home with a good paycheck.
Oh don't let the bastards grind you down. Typically the same folks who say sales is not a real profession are the same who say "soft skills" are not as important as "hard skills" but would eat cyanide before doing a presentation in front of people. We all need to justify our existence to ourselves. If you need to do it by putting down others, you are typically in a sad place. If you were born with an affinity towards persuasion, you have a chance to take the fast track in life is all. Comes with the associated stress. Your college buddies can do their 9-5. Take them as seriously as they deserve to be taken.
Companies don’t exist without someone to sell the product
