Mid job search and found a position at a company I’d like to work at, but they mentioned it was 2nd shift on the phone screen. I said I preferred first but would be open to 2nd for the right position. It’s now coming down to an offer and I really don’t want to do 2nd shift. Is there anything I can do? It’s also not remote, which I don’t love either..

If you like the job description and the salary, take this 2nd shift. As time goes on there could well be the opportunity to move to 1st shift as employees come and go. If you don't take the job now, then see them advertise a 1st shift position in a year from now, you probably wouldn't have a chance at it as 2nd shift employees would probably apply for the transfer. Get your foot in the door and wait for your opportunity.

This.

I think you need to decide if the job is worth working second shift and commuting. I'd imagine if they're hiring for second shift, that's probably the role that they need to fill.

There’s no reason you have to put up with a job you hate. I spent many years working in a toxic environment with a boss who gossiped and lead through fear. He wasn’t really much of a leader but basically a foreman. And he could make my existence miserable. I admit that it wasn’t easy to find another job but the bottom line is: trust your guts. If you feel something is wrong it’s because it probably is. Don’t second guess yourself. Look for options and and fight for your mental health.
