Out of curiosity. How would a company view a potential candidate who has a period of unemployment to study for the CPA. I am considering to start studying for the exam but I know I would need to leave my employer in order to give 110%. I am contemplating the idea of at least passing one part while employed. Then leaving my employer to study FAR. I am considering to leave my current employer anyways, so it’s more of how my future employer would view that lapse.

Considering an in-house position at a firm client (firm is not aware of my interest), and I have worked directly with the AGC that would be my supervisor. Thoughts on reaching out to the AGC directly to convey interest?

I’m an accounting advisory M2 in Los Angeles and hoping to find a position around $150k in industry. However a recruiter said that’s too high and I should be looking more around $130-140k, I can’t tell though if she’s being honest or just hoping I’ll take a smaller salary so that she can get an easier commission. If you’re “Networking” you’re doing it wrong.

Would you walk up to someone you’ve never met at a dinner party and ask for their number?

That’s what a connection request without a note is like.

Not interested.

Start a conversation. Be friendly. Be genuine. Be curious. Be respectful. Learn and exchange ideas.

Don’t only reach out when you need a job.

Get to know childrens’ names and favorite vacations.

Be a friend.

Friends aren’t a “network”.

They’re people we care about.

What do you do when you make the wrong career choice?

Forgive yourself. No one is perfect. You are learning. Wrong choices are part of the learning process.

Ask for forgiveness if your choice negatively impacted another.

Work on recognizing the space between stimulus and response. Ask for help if you need it.

All of the above will help you make a better choice next time.
