MLB Owners want it both ways. If everything’s going well (like past 5 years) owners get to keep the upside and pocket that revenue. If there’s a bad year, such as this year, they want the players to help share in the losses.
There’s definitely way more nuance to it in baseball in regards to no salary cap, owners not wanting to open their books, taxpayer help paying for stadiums, etc. but at the end of the day I’m on the Players side of this 100%.
Same thought. Funny how it’s always the richest people in these situations who take the upside and want to share the downsize (top 1%)

Law school: A contract is legally binding

New School: Let’s share everything
Pre School: It’s mine. Give it back
Idk.
Lots of schools of thought here to consider.
MLB owners and players already negotiated this in March when it all started. They agreed to full prorated salaries. Now the owners want to renegotiate and pay less (80% prorated). If I was a player, I’d want to be paid based on what was negotiated when this all started.

Owners have been winning since pretty much the start of organized baseball. Contracts are almost always owner biased. They have the ability to uproot the lives of their players and they don't lose a wink of sleep. They have no sport without the players and they are contractually obligated to pay these players. In short, the shoe is on the other foot.
They were also fully aware of pandemic insurance and they didn't take part. Pay the players. If you don't, the players will have even more leverage at the union discussions coming up.

We did this with the NBA lockout several years ago —- the owners crushed the players when push came to shove. Truth is, a billionaire with multiple investments can last a lot longer than someone making a max of $3M and without any other income stream.

“Support the players” seems just a little too surreal for me at the moment.
Are none of you old enough to remember 1994? Rich people arguing with rich people about how much money each should get is a losing argument no matter what side you’re on. I do believe no matter what, viewership across all sports will be down in the foreseeable future. I hope we have reached the high water mark of player salaries, and I hope that means players and owners just shut up and play baseball.

Imo either pay the player or terminate them. Owners can try to negotiate a pay cut and players should take it in exchange for some other benefit. If they dont pay the players should become free agents and able to negotiate another contract once things pick up
Sports is only a distraction, and an overpaid one at that

Work with Washington to legalize gambling for one year to make up for lost revenue. Rather than paying for tickets people will pay with losses. Win win.
Play baseball or say nothing. This back and forth helps no one.

If they don’t play this season, viewership hurts for many years and long term revenue takes a huge hit. They need to work together or both get punished. Careers will be ruined.
If the players and owners are going to reconciliation their differences, it will start with the acceptance that neither side will be able to achieve their prorated profits throughout this year. This, if anything, shows a lack of preparation and depth in the current cba.
