My 7 year old daughter goes to Learn to Skate classes in Arlington. She’s currently at B4 and has repeated it twice and hasn’t cleared it yet. IMO, She’s actually really good and confident on the ice, but I’m starting to wonder whether skating is really her strength or if I should consider pivoting to another activity.

How did your child typically progress? I completely understand it’s not about competition. I’m just trying to get a sense of what’s normal.

I don’t think you should pivot if she’s enjoying it. It’s hard to find activities kids truly enjoy! Who cares if it takes her a little longer? Would you pivot careers if you missed a promotion?

As a European, the level of child-activity-optimisation in the states is insane to me. Let kids enjoy just playing around. If she likes it, let her skate. If she doesn’t, change. Not everything is about crafting extracurriculars for a Harvard application.

Does your daughter like it? If she doesn't, that may be the reason she isn't progressing. Ask how she feels about it and if she wants to stick with it or try something new.

As a kid i got held back in ice-skating and decided it wasn't for me. I was way too stubborn and just wanted to do my own thing. Not sure if that relates at all with your daughter, but that was my personal experience. I liked ice skating, but didn't like to be coached.

If she likes skating I would invest in a private lesson or two to get her to pass the level she is struggling with.

At the rink where my boys learned to skate they maintained a list of private coaches that were authorized to work at the rink. I don’t know if other rinks have this. (My boys are now well past learn to skate one now races short track speedskating and the other plays hockey, but my speedskater had a very difficult time learning to hockey stop which is a level 5 skill. With one private lesson he was good to go. He needed the one on one.

Private lessons and lots of ice time

like

My 5 year old just got B5. She has progressed quickly because she spends a lot of time in the ice with her friends and older girls, and does group lessons a fee times a week in the winter plus a few privates.

I think it’s really about cumulative time on the ice more than super focused practice at this age.

And by ice time I didn’t mean skills practice - it’s just time screwing around - I feel like that has unlocked some comfort with skills.

But overall, we go because our family spends a lot of time on ice (hockey & such), so it’s just how we spend time.

Basic 4 is a hard level. It takes time to get it. Does she skate outside of class?

Wow 7 year olds at big 4? That’s impressive, I didn’t get in until I was 22.

I have got 6 years of experience and I have done MBA in finance. My last company was a Big 4. They are ready to pay me 9L and I require a 100% increment. will they give me 12 L? Should I accept 9 L?

Deciding between a few offers that I have received/am expecting in the coming days/weeks and would love advice!

Current Salary: $80k TC

-Sr Business Analyst at major company in financial industries: $100k TC
-Sr Consultant at Big 4: $110k TC
-Sr Consultant at Boutique Firm: $125k TC

I would love to work in financial industries, but I dont know if having a Big 4 name would open more doors in future, or if $25k is too much to pass up on. Any input is appreciated :)

Thanks in advance
