Personally, I would disregard, do an exceptional job, and let them figure out what they value.
Yikes! Sounds awful for your overall mental health. I’m fully remote now and it’s the best thing ever. As long as I’m logged in and reachable during my work hours, getting the work done and meeting my expected billable hours, that’s all they care about.
That sounds like the perfect job! I notice you're in family law...I'm actually trying to get back into that type of law... any suggestions?
Yes. My firm done this. It got sent round weekly to partners and then people would get pulled up.
I was going to say keep doing what you do, and the results speak for themselves. But I have worked for a similar toxic law firm, that are a B Corp "accredited", and they are the most underhanded dreadful toxic partners. They use ANYTHING against you if you have a complaint about another partner, My advice, follow the "rules" and find a less toxic place to work, can be difficult in law lots of toxic firms.
I’m in house. They track us by badge too but I don’t know that anyone has been given warnings. They tell us we’re being watched though. I have to go in 2 days a week
The firm I was at had the admin walk around the entire office every morning to essentially take attendance. And then by 4pm the managing partner would do a run through to see who was still in office. And if you didn’t show up they Would call to see where you were. Not to mention that they also watched the cameras to see who kept walking in and out. So glad I left.
get a robot to badge in for you
What firm?
A ton of companies have flipped the script of late and have been doing things that clearly show that they don't trust their own work force. Meanwhile, many of these same companies are doubling down on whatever unethical behavior they've been doing and bringing in new unethical behaviors to match. Modifying their employment terms to the point of almost being unconstitutional and CERTAINLY violating many state and federal labor laws, all while increasingly treating loyal employees like criminals.

Ya know, not every thought needs to be shared on the internet.
I've worked in 4 firms. 3 of them (1 small, 2 mid-size/small) were all salaried and did not require I clock in/out, but someone would come around to 'say good morning.' If someone wasn't there, they would get very investigative and ask the other attorneys whose offices were near where they were and even call/text the attorney. The first two firms was an 8am show-up time and the third was an 8:30am show-up time. the first firm was a contingency-based firm and the the next two were flat rate. Firm #4 has an hourly billable requirement and while it's not explicitly stated, there is an understanding that the associates will work from the office most of the time (usually coming in each day) and the come-in time is very flexible (usually by around 9). The general time to leave is usually between 4-5pm and you can take lunch whenever, not take it, whatever you want. Now, if you have a doctor's appointment or court or anything, they don't care that you go so long as you meet the billables (which are pretty low imo). I have never had to clock in at any firm as an attorney. I have always had keys to the buildings, but there was nothing electronic to track us. 3 of the firms did not have official HR departments, including the one I am currently at. All I know is that while billables aren't fun, I love where I am working and the flexibility to take a vacation when I want or make a doctor's appointment or attend my kids' school event is amazing. I just put it on my calendar and I go. There is no horrible micromanaging like my last firm. The firm I was at right before this one was so anal about everything - to the point that I got in trouble because I put my phone on my desk when I arrived one day and got chastised by the owner until I put it away - even when I explained it was only there to see if it rings for an emergency for my child at school (I'm a single mom) and the phone is on silent. Of course... when I'm not in the office for any reason (at court or it's 10pm at night or something) that same no-phone firm demanded I answer it and respond to messages.... That place was horrible.
Just because you go to the office does not mean you are w orking once you're there.
