Occasionally, we get some excessive noise. Not too often, thankfully, I also find it very difficult to focus with a lot of background noise. I have a pair of wireless earbuds that have a setting where it’ll dull the noise, but I can still hear and have a conversation if needed.

Yeah that doesn’t help me either, as the background noise just overrides everything for me!
I had a job where my desk just happened to be at a crossroads in an office, sort of a place where a lot of people would pass by. And it always seemed that when I had to concentrate a conversation would break out adjacent to my desk. I couldn't do much about it, I was low level and couldn't really reprimand people. So I somehow got good at just tuning it out. Today I'd probably revert to noise canceling earbuds.

Oh no, that sounds such an awkward spot, sounds like that could get noisy too if there was lots of conversation going around you!
Only constantly. Have never been as productive as I was when I was able to work from home! Gosh I miss it.

I find working from home occasionally a dream! No distractions at all, so nice. Hopefully you get that option again at some point in the future 😊
I worked for a company that had 99 percent staff remote. I was hired to be hybrid onsite . My mistake never asking to tour the office during the interview process. It was a human resources office that had offices inside the office. There was a receptionist and she signed people”if” we ever got a visitor… which was rare. A couple of days a week there were a few admin that were right outside my office and were nice but a bit loud and right in my earshot of my office and it echoed funny. I would close my door and then my boss said that I was in violation of the open door policy. I chuckle when I think about this whole thing now … Open policy? To whom? There was no one on site except a 5 of us who worked dog days in the office. isn’t open door really more philosophical?

Oh no, that sounds very draining! I’m glad you left as that sounds like so much frustration every day! I hope you’ve found somewhere now that works better for yourself! Inexperienced managers come with so much baggage in my opinion, and so much agro that they can’t manage and it’s not a nice environment to be in.
I also struggle with noise. My manager whilst she is on her lunch break will listen to social media videos without earphones. I find it so distracting, makes me want to close her office door.

Yes that’s not a great noise either as that can just override your thoughts and quiet time, if you get on well with your manager I’d make a subtle sign on their door to tell them to shush haha - that’s just my humour and how me and manager are😊
I completely get this. My brain just latches onto random words from conversations and suddenly I am eavesdropping instead of working. Noise-cancelling headphones have saved me more than once.

Yes it’s hard to not listen in even when it’s none of our business haha😊
