I am so sorry to hear that. That sounds very challenging. What would you be bumped down to? It could have an affect on your long term career path.
I would start entertaining other roles while discussing the path to the next level (and related timing) with the acquiring firm. The title is important unless you are ok with sticking it out long-term with the acquiring firm until you can advance. If you do end up “stuck,” I’d list your experience with your current firm separately from the “new” role on your resume and illustrate how your responsibilities largely remained the same with the acquisition (assuming that is the case).
Thank you — very helpful.
ask yourself Do you get to keep your tenure? is your title change beneficial? what are the risks? and is there anything new this company can teach you if you stay, like software, licenses you would obtain, new systems. technology is always changing, and the most difficult question what is the window of finding another job?
I’m not sure what you mean by tenure. The job title is the opposite of beneficial. The software, etc. is largely the same as other firms where I’ve worked (though not this one).
If your pay doesn’t change don’t be too concern about a title.
Can you please clarify? Looks like you're a senior accountant with 2.5 years experience at your level. What are they bumping you down to? Staff? How many total years experience do you have?
I'm a little unfamiliar with the supervisor role. We're top 10 and just do staff - senior - manager - senior manager - director - partner. But so you have 12 years' experience? Are you functioning at a manager level? I'm not sure if there's anything to be done with the firm-to-firm transition, but if you're confident that you're functioning at a higher level and have a good leadership team at your firm, do you think you could make a case for promotion during the next review/promotion cycle? If you like the people you work with (internal and external), I feel like I'd probably give it a shot to see how things shake out and if you're treated fairly once the dust settles. If you're already looking for an 'out' than don't bother sticking around.
Does the firm that is acquiring your firm not have supervisors? Is it straight senior to manager. then i would say is not a bump down but lateral. Most firms require a CPA for manager. do you have your CPA?
