Motivation:
1) there are many other kids who would love to have those books - pass on the joy.
2) My mom kept some stuff from my childhood - bits and bobs. I have looked at them a total of 3 times in the last 20 yrs. 😂 Even less for my mom herself.
3) Encourage your children to give away stuff they don’t need anymore themselves. Seeing them be generous and teaching them paying it forward will be a delight for you.
In contrast, my in laws have hoarded everything from my husband’s childhood. It’s nauseating to see so much stuff just stored away gathering dust. My MIL asked me if we wanted to move it to our place and I was like heck no thanks. Barely have enough storage as it is. Also husband hasn’t looked at anything ever or been curious so why would I take it on? If I ever did I would donate all except some items to charity. FIL agrees it should have gone to charity ages ago.
Thank you - this really helps.
If it helps, find a title one school near you and see if you could donate. Or something similar. I always feel better when I know they are truly going to someone who will use and appreciate them instead of sitting on a shelf at Goodwill.
From another perspective, my mom kept about 30 books and then about 5 outfits a year per kid. My own kids are now reading those books and wearing clothes I loved. It’s really special to be able to see my daughter in my favorite dresses so keeping some is a great idea!
I agree - some clothes, books, and a few high quality toys are worth hanging onto. My toddler loves reading the same books I did and wearing his uncles clothes. He plays with the same blocks I did when he visits grandma.
No advice, just an I feel you and also trying to figure that out.
Hugs
Is there a free box, buy nothing, or mom's group on social media near you? I found it easier to part with things if someone really wanted it.
We just did a big book clear out and they went FAST when I posted them to give away
My house is small so I'm literally only keeping legit jewelry. Their lifes are being documented with so many pictures and videos being taken. No reason for me to store items that have little to value.
Find joy in donating to those in need. Literally save only 1 book for each child (pick the favorite one) as a memory. But donate every single other one, the next child to receive it will be so grateful 💕

Keep a few that your kids really loved, same with toys. The rest either sell on FB Marketplace or better yet on your local FB Buy Nothing group.
We live like minimalists and constantly unload things to families earlier in the kid process.
