Need some quick advice:
I’ve recently started contract work after a stint of unemployment. The contract I’m on is for a great company, but it’s short term. I’ve just received an offer for a full time role at a company that might be more dysfunctional, but it pays well and…is a full time permanent role. Should I ditch the contract and accept? Am I crazy for not immediately jumping up and down at receiving an offer?

Write down pros and cons and see what outweighs the other. If there is nothing lined up after contract, I personally would be leaning towards permanent job.

like

Yeah, it really is a gamble, the risks and benifits you will know only after making a decision. I'm pretty sure your gut tells you to go one way. Gut instincts are good indicator too.

like

But, do they put the fun in dysfunctional?

Please elaborate on how they are dysfunctional …

funny

I don’t know that they ARE dysfunctional, just…less “together” than the org I’m contracting with. A certain amount of dysfunction is expected at any organization, and a pro to dysfunction is that it speeds growth…or adds stress.

Go full time. Better pay plus benefits are great unless you think there might be lay off often or soon. You can always go back to contractor roles but full time ones are hard to find at the moment.

like

That’s where my head is at, too - I just have some guilt over quickly dropping the contract.

like

Can you share additional context, for example, about the dysfunction when the current contract ends, etc.?

like

Can you do both?

like

I’ve been thinking about it, but I don’t think it’s realistic - I’m a bit risk-averse and want to make sure I hold onto a role for a while, you know?

like

it may be frowned upon but i say if you can do both do both. as you said, the contract is short term so they shouldn't be too much overlap. now if you just started the contract then it may be wise to pass (again, unless you think you can handle both)

like

very fair. i think if you have some cushion with your side hustle and the contract is going well, then be weary of dysfunction is valid. missed that part of the OP and as someone who's been contracting for nearly 5 years, a salaried role isn't something i'm jumping into on a whim. weigh your options rationally vs emotionally

like

If you are not jumping up and down, I would look at what you might be concerned about.

If you can pull off both in the short term, it might give you some piece of mind.

like

Both if remote. Also. It’s dysfunctional but is the salary good? Meaning worth the headache. There is no such thing as kinda dysfunctional.

like

Salary is good, for sure. Both are remote, but I don’t think I could safely do both, and the risk isn’t worth it, for me.

like

It's hard not to lean toward the full-time role, given the market. But most of us have also worked in toxic cultures, so understand your quandary here. Could you share with the contract role that you have a FT offer, but prefer to work for them to gage any potential? Can you live off of contract and eventually go FT?

like

Appreciate you. I don’t think I feel bad about it, per se - just have had my hopes dashed quite a bit during this bout of unemployment, so it’s been hard to get excited again.

like

I’d stick with the contract. If you love the company it’s very likely the contract will extend or expand.

Ask your client now if you can extend the project or if there is more work to be had.

If the contract definitely won’t extend then explain you have a full time opportunity and see if they counter

like

The contract is tied to a specific, time-bound project - basically, a launch that does not shift. Post-launch, the contract is over. It also pays significantly less than the full time role. So while the contract is something *cool,* I do think the long term benefit is less.

I appreciate this input - it’s helping to crystallize the “this might happen” from the guaranteed (as if there is such a thing).

like

Sounds like you need to get more information on expectations, benefits, raises, company culture… etc before making a decision

Would kind of offer grant would you expect from high conviction Series B tech company if you wanted to switch? Would you be good with 1:1 match? would you be ok to get less because potential upside is higher?

I am looking to make a career change to HR. I currently make 75K as a sales and development coach. I had a recent offer for a state government position in a talent acquisition role but I’d be taking a $25K pay cut. My question is those currently in an HR role, would this move make sense to you?

Hello fellow SAP Consultants!
I am SAP HCM consultant having 4.10 years of experience. I feel that this module doesn’t have any growth. My first switch took me to 9LPA from 6LPA and now the second switch is being offered for 11.5LPA where I can see my fellow friends in SAP having more than 15LPA at the same experience on their second switch itself. Should I be worried about my skillset? Any insights would highly be appreciated. I feel stuck.
